    LE Intelligence

Do local police departments have intelligence divisions (or similar terminology)? Might be a cool experience and I'm kind of job shopping right now for when I come back to the states

Many large departments do, some use to but it wasn't PC so they disbanded them.

I've never heard of a LEO intel unit that could be called a division. Larger agencies may have a few people assigned to intel duties, smaller agencies may have one or two. Huge agencies like LASD may have a good sized intel unit but I'm not sure on that.

Well yes I remember writing a paper on the intelligence sharing between NYPD and the CIA. EO 12333 and the ethics of it blah blah. So that does make sense.

I'm looking to take a 2 month vacation from work when I get home and then maybe try something new for a change? Before I end up going to Syria or Iraq or Jordan lol.

Opportunities for a guy with 3 years experience in all-source, cyber and HUMINT analysis/collections? I don't want to move for a while so maybe there's something in the Bay Area. I'm aware of the FBI and have a couple contacts at the San Fran office but I'm only in my third year of college and AFAIK they always require a bachelor's.

My local pd uses Intel led policing, they use analysts to study patterns for deployment of officers and also for downloading info off phones and computers among many other things that way the officers can stay In the field. They are non sworn civilians. Most are former dispatchers and officers.

Most of the medium to large departments in the Bay Area have an officer assigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Force. That may be something that interest you, but someone just coming out of the academy is going to have to put in their time on the street before they would qualify for any type of special assignment.

So one would have to go through an academy and everything, no direct hiring

Edit: I've heard of the JTTF before and know it's like a FBI/DHS fusion cell.. Not much beyond that

Yep, all the positions in these types of units that I have seen, with the exception of maybe clerical staff, have been for sworn officers.
There maybe some types of aide positions with some of the sheriffs departments but even then, it is not an assignment that one would
                  go directly into.

If you're looking for a direct hire sort of position, you should be looking at federal agencies that hire intelligence analysts and research specialists for their offices or HQ. Fairly common on the federal level.

FBI has a posting up for Special Agent until the 16th I think. You should check to see if you can apply before graduation if they will hire as long as you graduate before your enter on duty date. Your background is exactly what they are looking for right now. Particularly if you speak another language.

Now passing a stupid poly is another topic.

Lol, poly isn't a concern. You don't happen to have a link to that already do you? On a DLPT scale I'm about a 1+ in Spanish, 1 in Arabic

Hey.. worst case scenario, unemployment is $1,800 now right? lmao

LASD has special units, but you will have to pay your dues first. Courts/Custody/Patrol, etc. usually a minimum of 5-7 years on the streets before going to a specialized unit.

I see. I don't really feel that's my lane, providing intel with LE would be a cool experience but becoming a full-blown police officer is really a whole new career, but I enjoy the one I have/am still beginning..

Poly's are a crapshoot. But yeah don't let it concern you. You pass or you don't. If you don't then you move in. It's just the Feds use it like a screen out element rather than to just confirm your background investigation like the locals do.

Another option you can try if you are a vet is to go federal prison. You'd surely get in and have a paycheck and good job and start the fed retirement clock and be favorable for the intel positions with other fed agencies when they open.
