Are you (and possibly your family) comfortable with being on the road for 30-40 weeks a year if you get involved in any sort of protection detail work?
There are certainly career paths at USSS which don't involve so much travel, but its never been clear to me if its possible to avoid it by choice. -
Friend worked it for awhile... Got burnt out fairly quick. This is what he told me when I asked what was it like:
Go outside on your back porch. Stand there for an hour. Go to the front porch and do the same. Do this for 8-10hrs a day no matter the weather. While standing, you must remain alert and prepared for someone to try to kill you or someone inside your house anyway they can. Repeat several times a week.
Now, I have also spoken to some guys who worked on the advance teams. They thoroughly enjoyed them; however, some of the "perks" of those teams have been reduced lately (think of some of the previous news articles.). From what I know second hand of the job; I wouldn't do it. There are some good stories at my agency from when they have helped out security details for Presidents in the past; but I would personally get tired of constantly training for things that (almost) never happen. Some of the other investigative jobs might be kind of cool; but I never asked about whether those job paths are chosen or voluntold.Last edited by CBR_rider; 08-25-2014, 4:55 PM.Stay classy, CGF and Calguns.Originally posted by bwiese[BTW, I have no problem seeing DEA Agents and drug cops hanging from ropes, but that's a separate political issue.]Comment

Based on my experiences and observations, I wouldn't. You'll hit that 13, but you may not be around enough to spend it or watch your family enjoy it once you go to the protection side. Make sure to talk to some agents first for 1st hand intuition before you make a decision.Comment

Another second hand account, my neighbor was with the service. His father retired frim the service as well. They both lived the job but in different ways. The dad grew up on a farm so the job sending him all over the world was always fun and exciting. He loved protectiin details. The son, loved the job but protection details were boring fir him. Since he spent his life moving around with his dad, all the movement was not fun. Last i spoke to him about 10 years ago, he was verry happy to get an assignment doing investigations in another state. They both tried to recruit me. But they were both telling me that I would have to move every few years. The wife is not a mover so I never even applied. I guess if you dont mind moving around, then you might enjoy it. When I was in BP it was somewhat political to get the GS12 sup positions (which I think are 13 now), so it must be a bummer to move on from that and run into the same thing.Comment

I worked with the squirrels, and the first ten years can be difficult with a lot of travel and protection deal. A close friend was on 41's protection detail, and after his two tour in protection he doesn't ever have to do it again. He is back home in a nice Southern Office doing a lot of financial investigations to include credit card, telemarketing fraud/bust out schemes, and illegal on-line gambling.
I going to guess you work for drunk every afternoon since you still have to fight for your 13's. The politics there have become as bad as ours; the last remnants of the old agents are slowly dying where common sense and taking chances was the norm. But I will tell you the grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence; just a different shade of brown. Going through CITP again would make me cringe; but then again, I had a really good time through CITP/CBES unlike the Border Patrol Academy.Last edited by veeklog; 08-26-2014, 9:44 PM.Comment
