Wy K9 handler cooks his partner

    News articles: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/08/23...cmp=latestnews

Synopsis: A K9 handler left his partner in a running patrol vehicle during the daytime with the windows rolled up for five hours without checking on her. She died of a heat stroke inside the car when outside temperatures reached over 85 degrees. He is now being charged with animal cruelty.

You guys think he should lose his job or just be disciplined? Stuff happens, I understand, but I'm not sure killing a very expensive (and apparently, unique to the department/possibly entire surrounding area) resource should be tolerated... In my opinion, Officer Miller should have to pay the replacement cost of a new dog. Even if the car had a heat alarm; it shouldn't be relied on. Our units have the alarms but no handler leaves his dog alone in a car (windows up/down/ac on whatever) for hours at a time.

Heard about this. What made the officer so forgetful? Was he on a call? Most K9 handlers take their dogs home, consider them part of the family.

Per the articles, he was at the station "training" another officer. I know people often get caught up in work, but for five hours????

I'm not sure how the officer could br shocked by this? I mean should come as no surprise right??

Im guessing he thought the A/C was on?

He definitely should be going back to solo patrol at the minimum unless there is something not reported about this situation (which wouldn't surprise me, either I suppose...)

Maybe. They said it went from the mid 50's to mid 80's while the dog was in the vehicle; I'm not sure he would have had the A/C on at such a cold temperature.

Crappy situation that was completely preventable..

Vehicle was running but the AC was off. Even if I had the AC on, I would not leave the dog unattended in the car for that length of time without checking. With mid 80's temps, the dog would have been ok with just the windows rolled down (assuming the vehicle has a cage like or K9 units). The officer screwed up caused his dog to suffer and die. I don't have a problem with him being charged with a misdemeanor. I don't think he should lose him job though.

Our K-9 handlers check on their dogs religiously. They even have car temp alarms on their belts. If the system fails and the temp rises too high, the SUV's windows roll down automatically.

Its called a Hot Dog system.

Sad day all around. I would look at the policy first and see where he stands. If he was within policy, I think he's OK. If not, I guess we will see where it ends up.

Fire his azz. Anyone that stupid and/or that irresponsible should not be a LEO, let alone a dog handler.

The dog is a tool. Would you bring a dog who is trained to tear people apart around your kids? This also depends if it a drug dog or a bite dog.... There still is no excuse for leaving the dog in the car, but I know most bite dogs are kenneled when off duty.

All of our dogs were trained to bite. They also were cross trained in tracking or as drug dogs. I also know several handlers that had their dogs in their homes when off duty. One guy had little kids, and his dog was great with them. I think it depends on the dog though.

Hes being charged with Misdemeanor animal cruelty. Isn't this is a federal crime?: abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=96229
