Lighters are for noobs, use a heat gun, it's easier on the leather and works faster. Parade gloss I like more for dress shoes. For boots use regular black kiwi, and whatever you use to apply. I like old t shirts myself.sigpicComment

I'll add that I agree that you should have the first polish done by a professional. Besides getting you started on a solid foundation, it will give you a good idea of how good the boots should look.
I've never tried a carwash shoe shine guy...do they still exist?
The best shines I've seen were from a professional outside the local courthouse (Big John) and at the Nordstrom's Men's Shoe Department...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment
