Why don't cops care about weed?

It seems to be a weed free for all out here. You can't walk one block in San Francisco without smelling it. In Fairfield I saw a driver lighting up at a stop light. I softly knocked on the FF PD car's window and let the officer right behind the driver know. The Officer shrugged and drove off when the light turned green. In Suisun the cops say they want to join the folks smoking at the waterfront.

Doesn't it embolden people to commit larger crimes when we constantly do nothing about the smaller ones? Doesn't it attract more of these people when it is continually tolerated?

I beleive it does. And it is everyones business when it's illegal. Just asking why it is tolerated.

Its tolerated because we are in a cash strapped state and it's not a priority. It's not a priority because there are already plenty of emboldened criminals around to use resources up without getting into pre-crime. As i understand it, thats why schwarzenegger decriminalized mj possession, not because he advocates recreational use but because it cost so much to prosecute these possession cases. I give the governator credit for signing that one because, slippery slope argument aside, these people are not hurting anyone else and it doesn't make alot of sense to spend limited resources on enforcement of an infraction.

It does surprise me that the cop didn't care he was smoking in his car though.... cant imagine why that would be tolerated.

              Pot in SF

What prosecutor in there is going to even consider it? It ranks along side open container. How many of us have gotten off work and had a beer in the cup holder on the way home? Not saying its right but when you've got a town full of people riding bikes buck naked through the place on pride day, ah hell its like the twilight zone.

If you, as a citizen, voted for Prop 215, then I, as a cop, am not going to give a care about weed.

IMO... If you investigate the politics revolving weed and how much the pharmaceutical companies and prisons stand to lose if it were to be legalized on a federal level, you'll realize how much time has been wasted with attempts to thwart this "gateway drug".
FYI, I don't smoke weed, but if I did, the points I've made are still valid.

I utilize weed as PC for detaining/warrant checks. Others than that, I don't mess with people who are smoking marijuana.

I'd rather spend my free time making felony arrests rather than writing infraction citations. That's just me.
