    Holster options

As a patrol officer, what type of holster did you use? Level 3 or 2? What brand? Is a thumb break just as effective as a thumb lever?

    Thanks for your time!!!

Some agencies dictate what holster you will use. You may be given a list of holsters that are authorized for use.
      It all varies..

Safariland is probably the most common duty holster. The 6280 or the newer ALS model in a mid ride is very popular on patrol. Like mentioned above, holster choice maybe dictated by policy as well.

Last time I was in uniform 13 years ago my favorite was the Safariland 070. With a lot of practice I was able to draw and shoot as fast as the issued Level I. But times have changed and there are a lot better options for a Level II and Level III than the 070.

The thing is if you go with any security holster, whether a Level II or III, you need to practice drawing and holstering. If you don't practice, in times of extreme stress and danger, fine motor skills go out the window and you will revert to what you know, and you might not be able to draw in a life and death situation. That is why practice is so important because in times of stress, you will fall on training.

My last issued holster was the Safariland 6280 (SLS) which I still prefer to the ALS. The direction of the release is an easier transition for those of us who started with thumb breaks.

The ALS is more optimized for guns without thumb safeties...it is really clumsy when paired with a 1911
