    Back up gun choice.

So I'm wanting to get a back up gun. Policy has no restrictions on which gun I can carry. However, it does state that if it is not in .40 one has to write a memo and get it approved through chain of command. My duty gun is a sig P226R E2 (so unfortunately I cant do the g22/g27 back up mag commonality set up). I'm thinking of vest carry, but not opposed to ankle.

Right now I'm looking at a glock 26/27. I prefer 9mm and have a 19,17,and 34 I shoot often so I won't have to feed another caliber. I do get free .40 HST if it is in .40 cal though. I'm also considering a glock 42 or even a airweight snubby. input/personal opinions are greatly appreciated.

I would not ankle carry. I had my P230 come off my ankle in a foot pursuit one night. I went to vest carry after that. I ended up switching to a G27 from the P230 though.

I carry a bodyguard .380 in my left front pocket in one of those desantis pocket holsters with the sticky stuff on the outside. Ankle carry throws off your lower back after a while.

For many years I carried a Ruger SP-101 in my vest. If you REALLY needed it, it was convienient and always went bang as well as being accurate. Ankle carry has too many problems IMHO. Autos are ok, BUT they could jam when you really need it, not usually, but still possible. Hope that helps. Just remember if you're pulling out your back up, your life is probably in imminent danger and you want something that is definitely going to go bang.........your life is going to depend on it.

The back up gun has to be absolutely functional when needed. I carried S&W model 42 in my pocket. I stayed away from semiauto pistols, because they need regular maintenance. My revolver served me well, it is very reliable with minimal maintenance.

S&W 340PD when I was at a dept that allowed me to carry something other than Glock. Great lil gun and always went bang when I needed it to.

For a long time, I carried a S&W model 60 in the vest carry. Last back-up was a 239 in 40S&W vest carry.

Can you PM me a quote for a s&with shield in 9pm? I'm a LEO so I don't think I have to have the CA compliant version.

Considering this is a public forum, wouldn't it be best not to discuss where you carry a backup weapon.

^ well it depends on what "scenario" you think is playing out.

When I was working undercover auto theft back when we had to carry revolvers, I carried two revolvers and a derringer for a total of 50 rounds when everyone else carried 18 rounds
