    Hit and run

Wanted to ask the LEO's here what are the chances of the person getting caught with only a vehicle description and driver description along with area of vehicle damaged.

I was standing in my driveway and witnessed the entire incident. Victim was clearly shakin up so i called the police and reported it along with the description of the driver, vehicle make and model, color of vehicle, damage to the vehicle(traded paint with the victim, white yukon with now burgundy strips down driverside quarter panel), and direction he fled of in.

What are the chances he gets caught and how long will there be a bolo out for him?

Officer showed up shortly after and made a incident report and i gave him my information incase they needed a statement from me.

Made me realize i should ad a few more security cameras to my system with one monitoring the street(where i normally park but had my vehicle in the driveway at the time). If i had one monitoring the street i would have surely gotten his plate number. Oh well now im off to order a couple more cameras.

My Ol lady had a hit and run. Pushed her door backwards into her front fender. She got the make model and 3 numbers of the plate......

Nothing came about it. That was 3 years ago. And last year I saw the car in town. Had damage in the exact spot as it should. Time I for through traffic and flipped a u-turn it was gone. I've been eyeballing all the white BMWs x3s in town since then.

Slim. That is why I tell all my clients to spend a few extra bucks a month for UM/UIM. Besides, if it is an illegal they usually have fake insurance anyways.

He still could have been illegal, just because he looks white doesn't mean he can't be an illegal immigrant.

Very unlikely, unfortunately, to find the guy at fault more than a few minutes later, without a license plate.

We had a side swipe hit and run on the freeway. I got the license #, but by the time LEO responded they were long gone. I couldn't identify the driver because all I saw was the back of his head.

LEo's sent the registered owner some form of letter notifying him I think that the accident had been reported to DMV or something like that. My Insurance company sent his insurance company the bill. At that point he finally responded and claimed we had hit him. IDIOT

They can probably find the suspect vehicle...the chances of prosecution are very slim. Nobody other than the detective assigned the case is going to be looking for the vehicle unless it was a hit and run with serious bodily injury.

Low priority call if it's property damage only so other than an initial area check, that's about all the follow up you're going to get. DA's usually don't file these cases even if the vehicle is located as identification of the driver is difficult so it becomes a civil insurance matter (if you're lucky and the car is insured).

If there is only a vehicle and driver description, the chances are slim (at best) and they're only that good for about 10 minutes.

Whenever there is a recent crime, we try to get to the scene and get an initial broadcast out over the police radio. When folks are fleeing an area after doing a crime, their adrenaline is kinda high, and that translates into some exited driving behaviors. We accustomed to looking for those. If we hear a good broadcast, we'll quickly scope out the area, and likely flight paths of the suspect, to see if we can get lucky. In urban areas, maybe 1 out of every 10-15 crime broadcasts will result in the location of the suspect vehicle. The real problem here is that we just can't get to the scene of relatively minor crimes quickly enough to make a broadcast meaningful.

Once that initial opportunity is passed, the odds go pretty close to zero. Without any investigative leads, there really isn't anyway to work the case going forward. Sometimes an informant may give up the suspect, or we contact the suspect on some other matter and learn of their involvement by working the case backwards.

Anytime there is the passage of time between the offense and the location of the suspect vehicle, there is also going to be the problem of identifying the driver. There is no law against being the registered owner of a vehicle used in a hit a run. We still have to put the suspect behind the wheel.
