    Traffic Stop Gone Bad

This is a prime example of why LEO become aggressive during a traffic stop when a person is not in compliance. Its a dangerous job, and you are not aware of a persons intentions or disposition when confronting them.

People always complain of officers being overbearing but this is an example of why an officer must control a situation by any means within confines of the law.

So, I commend those of you on patrol. Your not jumping to conclusions when someone gets jumpy with you; because it could turn into whats in the video.

If you haven't seen the video before please learn from it. Have a great day.

I saw (and read the article), but the video wouldn't show up, probably because I'm on my iPhone. Anybody able to embed it?
    Sorry, not sorry.

Wow, not only did Kertis engage and stop the attacker, he radioed that he was "officer down" and finally when all his buddies came to back him, then he sat down due to all the injuries he sustained.

(WARNING: INCLUDES VIOLENT CONTENT) Dramatic police car video shows an exchange of gunfire between a fleeing man and Pittsburgh police in March 2013. The video was shown prior to 20-year-old Dante Bonner of Larimer entering a guilty plea in the case. Both Bonner and the officer involved survived the shooting.

No question that it is a dangerous job and I have tons of respect for cops.

But please tell me how this video is a "prime example" of why cops become aggressive during a traffic stop?

The video starts shortly before the perp jumps out of the backseat and runs. No amount of officer aggression in tone or posture would have stopped him from running. Nothing is seen before that point to know how the police were handling the situation good, bad or whatever.

It's a prime example of cops defending their lives from a murderous thug, but that not a waiver for cops to be aggressive to everyone.

How did you get that from the OP? He never said anything about being aggressive to everyone. Allow me to repost what the OP said.

If I pull you over and you start to open your door and/or get out, I will be VERY blunt and VERY clear that you are to stay in the car. Some people get their feelings hurt when they are spoken to in such a direct manner. But I've had gangsters bail on me with loaded guns and I don't know what your intentions are.

A number of officer safety concerns and questionable tactics there. I am relieved the officer recovered. I will reserve public comment on the tactics due to OPSEC.

Not a LEO but I watched a couple FF videos yesterday and kinda felt the same thing. When I was was working I tried to remember that at crunch time the test often comes BEFORE the lesson.
Whatever was off in that video, the officer has a warriors heart. Good for him.

^This. People seem to forget that during such encounter, they are not legally free to do as they please. On several occasions I have had to tell people that if they refused to stay in their vehicle, that they would be sitting in the back seat of mine until we were done.

Yes, I understand that, he is focused on people who are not complying.

but, you snipped out 75% of my post and focused on the "waiver" portion. This video is not a prime example. The video shows a cop defending his life, not "getting aggressive". He was in a battle for his life.

I just don't see how we're all suppose to agree with OP that this video is proof that we shouldn't be surprised when cops act aggressively when someone stopped follow instructions. They are all case by case situations.

I'm not questing that at all. There is a wide spectrum of both your attitude and response to the many many different and sometimes life threatening situations you are most likely exposed to.

All I am saying is that this video, which is out on the hairy edge of life-threatning situations does not also explain every other situation where a cop gets justifiably aggressive, nor should we equate them. Each situation deserves it's own critique.

Perhaps I'm reading too far into OPs comment.

While for obvious reasons I can't confirm that you are reading too much into the OP; it seems likely. What I read in the quote above is similar to what goes through my head on a traffic stop when I am dealing with someone who decides they don't want to cooperate. I have an extremely short time to try to figure out what they are trying to accomplish by not cooperating and how I am going to react to that. I fortunately haven't had anyone shoot at me on a traffic stop (or had to shoot anyone on one, either..) but I have had: people hop out of a car to fight me, people bail out of a car/cause a ruckus to distract me from other occupants of the vehicle (while they had contraband/weapons), people run from traffic stops with firearms, people refuse to go with the program until they saw backup arrive (dunno what their intentions were while I was solo), etc.

What I read in the OP is simply: listen to the LEO who pulls you over and do what they say during the course of the traffic stop. If someone refuses to do simple things like put the vehicle in park, maybe turn it off, keep their hands on the wheel, stay in the car (or out of it), or whatever other simple, lawful orders that may be given, they should not be surprised if the LEO who pulled them over is no longer "Officer Friendly."

Don't give an officer a reason to believe that their encounter with you might turn into what is in the video. Try to relate to the thought process of an officer as not to be offended by verbal judo. Also,Yes CBR Rider you are absolutely correct.
