    what Sheriff to vote for

    Hello my LASD brethren

For those of you who work for or worked for LASD, who would you recommend we vote for? Every one of us can influence 10 to 20 votes, so if we have a recommendation, then we may be able to help that person. If you dont want to put it here on the board, pm me and i will influence at least 10 votes in my family.

Definitely not who the NRA recommended; Tanaka.

I worked with a buddy at CJ in our early years, then Industry and Walnut in our later ones. Also, we both worked CJ as sgts. after that. Retired Commander Olmstead was a classmate of his and he highly recommends him. Olmstead is the one who went to the FBI as a whistleblower about the problems in the dept.

My friend's endorsement of Bob Olmstead is good enough for me. If I lived in L.A. County, that is who I would vote for.

Tanaka was groomed for years by Baca to be his replacement and if it wasn't for all of the problems in custody that came to light, he probably would have already been appointed as the Sheriff, with Baca retiring. Baca removed him as a result of those problems coming to light since custody was under the Undersheriff at the time.

            Mike,

I like Bob Olmstead the best. I only worked with him directly on one issue, but was very impressed with his personal abilities. He left command of a detective division unit to command the Men's Central Jail. He was needed there because of his personal abilities and then led to his falling out with the senior command staff and his ultimate testimony before the jail commission. I admire his courage in doing so. I think that makes him the best candidate.

McDonnell is my second choice. He established good track records at LAPD and Long Beach PD. He's an outsider and that would help him as a change agent, but at a price that we would not incur with Olmstead.

Both Todd Rogers and Jim Hellmold are capable of serving in the office, but are not in the same league as Olmstead. Rogers is the consummate politician. He did a very good job of commanding Carson Station, but when he publicly claimed a crisis in the department leadership, when he was the #3 guy in the leadership chain, his credibility went down the drain. I have kinda the same view of Jim Hellmold. He had a critical role in the "turn-around" of Compton when the LASD took over the policing of Compton. He did a lot of innovative stuff, primarily with technology, and in leveraging some private resources from the Belkin Corp, that really served the citizens of Compton well. He later went on to a very successful command of the Century Station. But he served as Baca's driver, and it was that service that really propelled him up the chain. That kinda worries me. I see him as a Baca "clone." We should all remember the pursuit of the white SUV in Compton, several years ago, that ended with deputies in a circular deployment around the vehicle, and then firing over 100 rounds (still in their circular formation) when the driver began to back up. I still have the L.A. Times cartoon depicting that "event." What was never popularly reported is that Jim Hellmold was the watch commander responsible for the supervision. Any other watch commander in the department would have been severely sanctioned for the absence of supervision and management. I found it most interesting that Hellmold's name had been stripped from all of the management autopsies concerning that "event." I have to believe that his relationship with former Sheriff Baca was the reason. That makes me get bothered when I hear him speak of responsibility and accountability. But it's only a single event, and he's earned a lot of other credit, but things like this count.

I'm strongly opposed to Paul Tanaka. I worked directly for him when he was a lieutenant. It was a great experience. I was impressed with his leadership and management skills. But something changed as he he gained additional responsibilities. I personally think that he moved up to fast and never "grew" into his greater responsibilities. I believe him responsible for the abuses in the jail system, and for being overly tolerant of misconduct in the field. These were the same problems that McDonnell and Olmstead worked hard to correct during the course of the Jail Commission hearings.

I think you two have made up my mind and i will do my part to help Mr Olmstead reach his goal. Once again thank you for the thoughtful and in depth information. Stay safe

To go along with what you have said about Tanaka, I would add this: Years ago when I was still on the dept., I had a conversation with a retired supervisor on the dept. The supervisor said Tanaka had worked for him at one point and he believed he was promoted too soon.

McDonnell is in a place to make better changes. He is an outsider so he has fewer people that will play the "you owe me one" card. JMHO

I voted Olmstead. I have met him and he has integrity.

Looks like there will be a run off between McDonnell and Tanaka unless McDonnell goes over the 50% mark overnight.

If Tanaka gets indicted, I wonder what would happen in a run off? Still hoping!

Jim Helmold gracefully conceded to McDonnell on Facebook and encouraged everyone to support him. Like I said, a class act.

So looks like McDonnell now in November. Basically one horse race from this point.
