    2nd Ammendment Opinion

    Hi all,

New guy to the forum and new California resident here. I have a very general question for any California LEO's that would be willing to offer an opinion.

Just as an intro I have to say that as law abiding lay-person and enthusiastic plinker, California gun laws can be very frustrating. I was born and raised in Illinois which had similar laws but not quite as strict as Cali's. I haven't purchased any new firearms in the state and the only ones I do own are a shotgun for skeet and one good hunting rifle and I WON'T be purchasing any new ones until I feel I better understand the laws out here.

Now with that being said, I'm very curious to hear an LEO's opinion about the state of gun rights in California. I'd imagine that the LA county sheriff would be a lot more enthusiastic about stricter gun control than say a sheriff in a more rural county.

As a side note I've always been a guy that lived by the credo that it was better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission (Navy taught me it was the best way to go when Chief's nowhere to be found), but anything that could turn out to be a felony?.... Well that's a horse of a different color.

For this particular thread I'm really just curious about the opinions floating around than the legality of anything though and I can understand this might be a point of contention even among LEO's so feel free to put me in my place if I'm out of line and I'll keep it to myself in the future. Thanks in advance and sorry for rambling.

    P.S.

I realize there's a couple threads here asking opinions but unless I missed it, I don't think I saw one that was looking for an overall attitude/opinion about the big picture of gun laws in the state, not just the standard concealed carry question that seems to be the one everybody wants to know.

Do you think many line level cops believe that someone hell bent on killing another human being is going to care if they pick up a felony for a weapons violation?

Thanks for the response CBR rider. No I don't think any reasonable person, LE or non, would think that anyone that determined to kill someone would give 2 sh@ts about a weapons violation.

My question is more about the majority of law abiding citizens and their rights. My personal feeling is that most of the more restrictive CA laws are more a product of fear then informed public opinion. I am, however, not entrusted with the duty of protecting the public from those that would do them harm. I would assume that most of the LEO's on this particular forum probably support the 2nd amendment rights of the general population, because a hardened criminal is probably not going to walk into a gun store, fill out tons of paperwork, get fingerprinted, wait 10 days (or 30 days?) for a legally acquired firearm with which they can then go commit crimes with.

I can also understand the other side of the argument, where it could be argued that less guns in general means less guns in the hands of criminals. I don't agree with it, but I could understand how someone could come around to that belief in their never ending battle against the worst of us.

Again thanks for the response and I hope to hear more

The laws are way too restrictive for law abiding citizens. Haven't come across a criminal who gave 2 *****s about the law they were breaking.
