I have used both style. First the Hawk style is much lighter lighter wight and does not pull on your clothes. It also allows less external wires. However, I normally use an old coil mic with a 1/4'' wire screwed in for a Surefire ear piece, love it. I only use the coil mic more, since it allows me to use the mic and speaker on the coil mic and pull out my ear piece, which is nice for my job.

What type of radio does your dept. use? and do you use a coil mic with it?

I bought some generic one from ebay for my XTS2500, and it seems to work fine. I route the wires through my vest, and the only one you see is the lead from the back of my neck to my ear. I switch back and forth between it and the regular shoulder mic. I have never had a problem hearing it, and it has never broken on me.
