    Weaver Stance vs Isosceles

    Hello,

First of all, I respect each and every one of you guys, you guys do an excellent job for our community, thanks. My question, what are you taught, and or which stance do you prefer, or would use during a situation in which you had to draw your firearm. Is there a benefit or drawback to either? I recently took a class in which the Isosceles Stance was the best method. Having been used to the Weaver Stance it took some time to adapt to the other stance. Also, how much training does it take to properly get "comfortable" to a certain stance? Thanks guys.

This is the stance I use.

When I first learned it it was strange and took a bit to get used to as I used the Weaver before. In my opinion, the Isosceles is an excellent, solid platform, and a natural accurate stance.

As for the training required to be comfortable...hard to say. Depends on what degree of "comfortable" is acceptable.

I'm with Irish. I grew up shooting Weaver, now shoot Isosceles. I still have a really bad habit of bringing my head down to the gun though...guess I need to load more ammo and practice more often! One of our old world class shooting instructors walked up and punched me in the chest, said "Face your asskicking!", moved me all around to a much better form and stance, and I've been pretty decent with a pistol ever since.

OP how long are you gonna keep your avatar like that?

Oh yeah, and I use the weaver stance. I think you should just use whatever you're most comfortable with.

Depends. Usually go for isosceles unless some crazy position is needed. Theory is that you'd rather catch a bullet to the plate on your chest rather than through your side where you're more exposed. Military here not LEO but reasoning should be the same I'm sure.

On a range: iso. Same basic stance (squared to threat, body armor forward) for all my weapon systems.

In a more dynamic environment: whatever platform let's me get and hold a reasonable sight picture for as long as I need.

Every situation will be and is different. Practice all stances and platforms. If your in a gun fight and there is cover or concealment use it! Don't be standing out in the open. Run and gun per say but not always depending on the situation once again. I personally like the Modified Weaver because it's more of a defensive shooting position allowing you to clear doors, rooms, halls easier...

When I went to 2-handed shooting, we were all using the Weaver and that is what they taught us in the Academy but in 1979. Well, they were just transitioning to it...so early 80s....and it was really more Chapman, so a modified Weaver. I shot in the original Isoceles when shooting PPC in the mid-80s and had completely changed over to the Modern Isosceles by the late 80s. You really need to be able to use both depending on your surroundings

I still teach both, depending on weather the client has a desire to continue to improve their technique. The Weaver is easier to teach and works better for folks that aren't really interested in working to get better.

If someone is willing to continue to improve their shooting technique, the Modern Isosceles offers faster followup shots, faster movement and is better for shooting from behind cover.

How long it takes to feel comfortable with it is dependent on your desire to learn a new technique. I've had client who were comfortable in a couple of hours and others who couldn't get there even after a couple of days

The answer you seek can be found by taking a brief look at every single competition shooter you can think of..... They are getting paid to shoot. They use the best method, and I do my best to mimic them.

Isosceles works better, but Weaver looks better on TV.
