    ? for LEO's about Volunteers & CCW

I'm a VIP(Volunteer in Police Service) for our local PD and I have a CCW. My question is....What are your feelings(Not Department Rules/Guidelines) on Volunteers with a CCW carrying.
The reason I ask is that our PD has volunteers that get called out to respond in personal vehicles to things like fires, traffic accidents, blocked roadways, crime scene's, etc, at all hours of the day/night as well as do scheduled on duty patrol's during the day.
As it stands right now we can only arm ourselves with a pocket knife and a maglite. I usually carry my weapon when not in uniform and almost always have one of my weapons in the car/truck when I respond to a call for service.
Just fishing for some suggestions or comments from LEO's.

    Thanks

I think you should follow the Department policy.

I think it is an incredibly bad idea to carry anytime you are working as a volunteer. On your time that is your business, but when your time becomes their time secure it somewhere.

Respond to your call, lock firearm in vehicle until done. If staying inside vehicle, put somewhere besides a holster on your belt. That's what I would do, but that's just me.

Department policy all the way. You open yourself and your agency to a boat load of liability if you are violating department policy. My agency strictly forbids firearms to be carried by non sworn personnel wile on duty. We provide pepper spray only. We don't send volunteers into situations that are potentially dangerous. I interview volunteers we hire and have had this conversation with several. My answer is, if you want to carry a CCW, and I highly support the right to carry, you just can't do it with us. If they don't like it, no need to move forward in the hiring process.

          Hope this helps.

            First, thank you for volunteering.

Now my opinion as a lawman for 33 years. Your PD is silly for calling volunteers out on calls like that. Andy and Barney is that busy?

I put my house on the vacation watch list one year. The two volunteers came a day early while we were packing and we had left the front door open. They walked in and asked what was going on? I read them the "riot act". Who would walk into a burglary in progress?

Stay safe my friend and thanks for your service
