    Criminals coming back after burglary.

    Hi all,

Wondered if the LEO on the forum had any insight into the idea that criminals come back to the same house after an initial burglary.

e.g. House broken into, misc items stolen and has safe they noticed but couldn't get into or perhaps there were other items they could have stolen but didn't (computers, tools etc)

Have you experienced incidences of multiple break-ins of the same residence?

Thank you for your input and service.

In 22 years I have never seen a home hit more than once in a short time period to make me think it was the same person or persons. I have seen cars hit multiple times in short time spans, but a home not that I can recall. Keep in mind most burglars are after quick sale items, and or what they can grab and be gone in a short period of time.

Very rare. Probably way less than 1%. I don't recall specifics but, was probably the type of house and person that sort of deserved to get ripped off. Poor locks, not maintained structure, etc.

I have seen a few burglaries where the bad guys return but generally that happens to either: obviously vacant properties or commercial ones. The very, very few residences where I knew (or suspected) the bad guys returned to were poorly secured and were in very bad neighborhoods.

I've only seen it a couple times in 8+ years. Take the first burglary as an opportunity to see your weak spots and fix them.

Years ago (many years ago), when crooks took TV's, VCRs as well as the normal jewelry, cash, and guns, I had a few come back because most people replaced all those electronics so they would come back and steal the new stuff.

Not so much anymore because electronics other than perhaps, tablets and smart phones aren't worth much on street. It's just the small valuable stuff now and coming back is pretty rare as most (not all) victims learn and start hiding stuff better or improve their security. Houses now that do get burglarized or robbed more than once are usually dope houses (crook on crook stuff).

Yes, I have seen them steal keys during the initial breakin and come back and take cars... I have seen this on sev occassions.

Also, if the victims are away, I have seen mult burglaries to the home, but no way of knowing if its the same suspects.

Delta Force vet Dale Comstock talks about what happened to his home with a perp that cloned his garage door opener. Guy came back twice knowing there were guns and people in the home trained in their use.

                Check it out:

Not LEO, but yes we were hit twice, the second time within a year of the first hit. Monitored alarm system with two large horns did not seem to bother the perps.
