    LEOSA Info

I have been told that for purposes of qualifying, that you only need to qualify with the same type of weapon you intend to carry. In other words, if you qualify with one pistol, it works for any pistol. If you qualify with a revolver, it works with any revolver.

I don't really mind qualifying with all of them, but with the cost of ammo I would rather use the ammo for practice under more stringent and varied conditions.

Can anyone confirm this, and possibly point me to the section of the LEOSA that covers this.

    Thanks

You are correct, you qualify with either a semi if you are going to carry that type of weapon or a revolver if you are going to carry one. You would need to qualify with both if you need that option.

Are you active or retired? There is no "same type" language for active- you're free to carry as you please. As for retired, the law states:

      (d) The identification required by this subsection is—

      (1) a photographic identification issued by the agency from which the individual separated from service as a law enforcement officer that identifies the person as having been employed as a police officer or law enforcement officer and indicates that the individual has, not less recently than one year before the date the individual is carrying the concealed firearm, been tested or otherwise found by the agency to meet the active duty standards for qualification in firearms training as established by the agency to carry a firearm of the same type as the concealed firearm; or

      (2)
      (A) a photographic identification issued by the agency from which the individual separated from service as a law enforcement officer that identifies the person as having been employed as a police officer or law enforcement officer; and

      (B) a certification issued by the State in which the individual resides or by a certified firearms instructor that is qualified to conduct a firearms qualification test for active duty officers within that State that indicates that the individual has, not less than 1 year before the date the individual is carrying the concealed firearm, been tested or otherwise found by the State or a certified firearms instructor that is qualified to conduct a firearms qualification test for active duty officers within that State to have met—

      (I) the active duty standards for qualification in firearms training, as established by the State, to carry a firearm of the same type as the concealed firearm; or

(II) if the State has not established such standards, standards set by any law enforcement agency within that State to carry a firearm of the same type as the concealed firearm.
      Hope that helps.

That's correct. Qualify with one of each and you're good to carry whatever you want.

Thanks everyone. That was the info that I needed. I really dont mind qualifying with them all, just hate to waste ammo I can use for training. I am a retired PD officer.

I just read an interesting article about LEOSA. It highlights that LEOSA applies to any firearm able to be concealed, and so therefore it exempts those with LEOSA creds from SBR restrictions as well. ...interesting....

NV has paired LEOSA with other requirements from the NV Chiefs Association. They require yearly qualification for a "218 card" and you can carry revolver or pistol and only need to qualify with one. Your card is renewed annually with qualification.

The article is basically saying LEOSA trumps state laws, except that some state and local lows trump LEOSA.

It sounds like you should get a CA CCW anyways and hope that other CA agencies will honor your locally issued CCW and everyone will honor your Federal LEOSA protection.

The comments in this article made me really sad.

What we have been told is that LEOSA trumps state laws as far as exempting us from state laws on being able to carry, and for what we can carry, but does not exempt the where and leaves State's gun free zones intact. The confusing part will be the yearly quals when I'm a (c)....
