I have been told by a few officers that the LEOSA requirement for qualifications only needs to be done with a like weapon for example a pistol would cover any other pistol, a revolver would cover any other revolver-no need to qualify with each weapon. I have looked at the LEOSA, but can't find this info. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't mind qualifying with each gun, but it does get a little hard to get enough ammo all the time.

The plain language appears clear to me. I have never heard any discussion or seen any documentation that explains in any detail what “of the same type” means.

I think a good argument could be made that qualifying with any type of “handgun” would allow the carrying of any handgun. There is no question in my mind that qualifying with a pistol would cover all pistols, as would qualifying with a revolver cover all revolvers.

I routinely qualify with my Glock 34, but most of time I carry a Glock 19.

"In addition to carrying the photographic identification issued by the agency for which they were employed or were separated, the qualified retired law enforcement officer must also carry documentation which certifies that they have met, within the most recent twelve month period, the active duty law enforcement standards for qualification for a firearm of the same type as the one they intend to carry."

My former department qualifies you on a semi auto pistol or a revolver, or both. You do not have to qualify with every gun you want to carry.

Mine requires that I qualify annually with the weapon I intend to carry, therefore, I wind up taking a Glock 23, a Glock 27, and an S&W 37 to the range. The make, model, and serial number are on the qual card.

Same with my department. On my ID it just says pistol or revolver, but they keep records at the range of what weapons you actually qualed with.

This may help. In a letter to its members on January 21, 2014 the Retired Peace Officers Association of California (RPOAC) addressed some common issues related to the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act. The last paragraph of that letter addressed the definition of "type" of weapon. They wrote:

As the legislative history, statute, and case law make clear, if you qualify on one type of firearm, you can carry any firearm of that type under LEOSA. Accordingly, qualifying with a handgun enables you to carry any handgun under LEOSA, be it pistol or revolver. No separate qualification is necessary unless the state or agency has a different qualification standard for it.
