First i'll say this. Weigh the cost/benefit here. Is it really worth placing yourself in harms way for property? Something that can be replaced? Although it can be frustrating, I would never suggest for someone to put themselves in harms way for property.
Depending on the total amount of the damage (>$950) or property value of the item that was stolen you could POSSIBLY be looking at a felony. Look into 484 PC, 487 PC, 594 PC and 10852 CVC for more info. As far as the camera goes. You're within your rights to put one in your car or on your property. However, even with photos it comes down to someone recognizing the suspect, if captured on camera.
Now with all that being said, yes you are within your rights to affect a private person arrest under
837 PC. A private person may arrest another:
1. For a public offense committed or attempted in his presence.
2. When the person arrested has committed a felony, although not
in his presence.
3. When a felony has been in fact committed, and he has reasonable
cause for believing the person arrested to have committed it.
and you can use whatever means deemed REASONABLE to affect that arrest. I say this cautiously because you have to weigh the severity of the crime when thinking about what is reasonable.
On another note. Thank you for your service.Last edited by NuGunner; 02-20-2014, 9:39 PM. -
If your last truck was destroyed by vandals, then you moved to a new apartment complex and someone is starting to vandalize your truck again, there must be something about your trucks that keeps attracting them.
Maybe a picture or description of it's appearance or markings would give us an idea.

Electrify you truck!
J/k. That would probably be against the law. Sure would be funny though. Watching the perp do the jitterbug in the ground in the security footage.Sorry, not sorry.

Dear autocorrect, I'm really getting tired of your shirt!Comment

Strange man. Maybe swap spots with your wife after you get home to see if they just screw with every vehicle out there, or if it's just you.
Haters will hate... can't combat that. You can't get yourself in trouble for that. With maturity comes responsibility and that responsibility in essence is full auto insurance, lol.
Fully insure and sleep well.Comment

You can get a cheap wireless camera... pick a thurs/fri/sat and watch it from your tv... have a non-emergency phone number handy which dials police directly and the moment you spot them then phone it in. The take a vehicle break in progress seriously, especially if you make it sound like they are stealing the vehicle itself... you should get a officer within 5 minutes. Friday-Sat are considered "mischief days" so good time frame.Comment

Maybe talk with a professional about these feelings and suspicions?

My wife grew up in the bay area. I drove my lifted 2500 HD up there once, and had two people make comments about it in the 3 days we were there. I have never had anybody say anything to me here in SoCal. I definitely think there is an attitude against large trucks in Liberal areas. My.02.sigpicComment

There have been a couple of DASH CAM threads on Cal Guns. Some are motion activated and record movement when the car is turned off. They film also while the car is running....
Don't get killed as some low life is messing with your car... a game camera with the IR night camera up in a tree overlooking where you park is another optionRule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
