    Patrol rifle light??

    Evening CGs.

This has probably been posted or asked before.

Looking for a good light on my patrol rifle, any ideas?

Currently using an x300 for my sidearm and surefire fury as my backup belt light. Seeing what others have tried and stuck with. Looking to spend no more then the cost of my x300, but would like to spend a little below that price and nothing too bulky on the rifle.

    Thanks CGers.

My department doesn't use lights on AR's. We have EoTech 512's on ours.

When you need to have a long gun mounted light, IMO that is where the Magpul MOE kit really shines. You can get an MOE handguard, illumination kit and IMO the best and most cost effective solution is a VTAC mount with a Surefire Fury with 500 lumens of goodness. They even make a dual output Fury with 15/500 lumens.

Fury is about $100. X300 Ultra is $210ish, the MOE handguard and illumination kit are about $40ish, the VTAC is $25.

If you have stock hand guards and a department that won't allow permanent additions to their rifles this is a great option. I have seen them in use and they are very well made and are very secure when mounted. It takes less than 10 sec to secure it to the weapon when needed. The company is local in Lodi, Ca and is owned and ran by LEO's. If you want further info or a demo contact Mike Kermgard thought the website. Lodi PD has a policy written for their use if your department requires policy before using personal equipment on their rifles. PM me and I can get you a copy.

I use my TLR1 with a pressure switch. Works well and doesnt cost an arm and a leg.

Great find E_Shaw! Eliminates the need to add a M1913 rail to a stock Colt M4 handguard. Looks like it will work with the double shield thick Colts if the cooling holes line up with the hand guard holes.

Surefire x300 if more than enough. Remember, too much light is bad tactics and bad for your eyes.

                          How many lumens is daylight?

Answer: A lot more than produced by any hand-held flashlight.

I'm going to go cliche and use Webster's (b) definition for tactics...because it's more applicable to what we are talking about than maneuvering combat forces. So here it is:

"the art or skill of employing available means to accomplish an end"

Let's look at the term "available means".

Tactics vary based on what experience, skill, and equipment one has at their disposal. The tactics of a military special forces team with multiple members, night vision, IR lasers, grenades, suppressors, and intense training differs from that of the patrol law enforcement officer. I make this comparison to illustrate the point that the whole concept of tactics is not universal...One must use great caution in saying something is "bad" tactics.

I have worked, trained, and researched extensively in the area of low light.

I have conducted experiments with high (500+) lumen lights by, among other things, setting my alarm for early morning hours, waking from a dead sleep, and using these lights with minimal to no greater issues compared to lower lumen lights using the same method. If you turn on a light, you will affect your night-adapted vision. It seems the severity is fairly consistent, regardless of the amount of light going out. Of course, if one views the light source, things can change a bit...But that's another experiment.

Bright lights are not bad for your eyes. They are a tool...Tactics make use of tools ("available means") to accomplish a goal. Appropriate tactics can take advantage of the positive traits of bright lights.

I have 3 X300 Ultras, 2 x300s, a TLR-2 (300 lumen), TLR-2G (200lumen), Streamlight ProTac HL (600 lumen), Eagletac T20C2 Mk III and 4Sevens Maelstrom (both bt/ 400-500 lumen), a Terralux modified Streamlight SL20 (600 lumen), a 700+ lumen Fenix PD32UE, along with several dozen other lights in various levels of lumens and lux.

I'm personally a big fan of the VTAC light mount, and I would strongly recommend looking into the EAG model Surefire Fury offered by Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM), but without knowing more about your specific needs, I would be hesitant to make a specific recommendation.

We use the Surefire M900A, the field officers are using the Eotech M3X
