    LASD- Ol' style brain bucket

    Guys/gals,

My substation partners and I are looking to buy a retiring sergeant an old style riot helmet (non-kevlar), the ones issued in the academy. I saw one at a retirement party for my partner (35 yrs LASD) that had been refurbished to brand new condition which we got to sign. I think it would be a great retirement gift for our sergeant.

Anybody got any good leads? I tried the internet and ebay and they are hit and miss. The Logistics sale at Stars is no more. Who would have thought I'd miss my ol' brain bucket. Even though the new one affords more protection, it has as much "character" as an AMC Gremlin. Yeah yeah, I know, I'm old. LOL>

    I'm watching those, thanks.

On the second one, I need to find someone who be able to restore the helmet. The emblem is hard to find too.

Check with All State Police Equipment. I think they have a source to refinish helmets.

That's right, I have seen them there!

Remember the old movies when cops wore them in squad cars? Maybe it was that or wear the shoulder harness?

They eliminated the requirement to wear helmets in the early 70's for LASD. Before my time, but I remember them wearing them when I did a ride along in high school.

I remember one of my favorite sergeants getting all the units on "Charlie" before rolling into a large party and saying, "Hats and Bats, Boys, Hats and Bats" indicating he wanted everyone wearing their helmet and having their baton with them

Also, if we worked the Rose Parade "Nightside" detail (1800-0600) you wore your helmet all night long on a foot beat.

                Ah, the memories..........

I had one of the old school ones issued in the Academy. I kind of regret having to turn it in for the Kevlar one several years ago, especially since I had long since made my own out of a surplus military helmet. And to Ron's point, I also had mine refurbished at All State, where they redid the surface, added a face shield, and put a new liner and chin strap on it.

Good luck OP, that is a great gift idea.

Bobby, I ckd with Allstate and they said they only refurb kevlars. I guess they changed their policy. Their suggestion was to try a autobody paint shop. Also, the helmet decal is tough to find.

Geez, I had a beautiful old LASD helmet with decal available last year. Listed it on eBay and it got pulled. Ended up selling it here on CalGuns.
