Ever come across someone claiming diplomatic immunity?

I'm not talking about our half-wit sovereign friends, but someone claiming diplomatic immunity from a real country or legislative immunity?

I was just reading my duty manual... I know, I know, but I get bored on security jobs... and read a section about it. Weird, because I've never had it mentioned in nine years. I wouldn't have a clue what real credentials actually looked like and my Googlefu is revealing jack ****.

Once in 20+ years. They should have State Department Issued Creds, dispatch has a 24hr number they can call to confirm the creds. If they are obviously intoxicated or a danger to self/others you can still hold them until a representitive from their govt arrives.

Never had it happen. I'm thankful for it too.

The verification number puts me at ease.

Most folks who legitimately have this immunity are very reluctant to do anything that would cause any embarrassment to their country.

I've only had a few contacts in thirty years. All of them were very pleasant.

My station did have an issue with the spouse of a diplomat who frequently parked her car illegally. A letter was sent to the diplomat and the problem ended immediately.

I've never had anyone claim diplomatic immunity (as others have said, thankfully!) but I have responded to a call for service from the Ambassador of another country. Very nice guy/family and he was happy with our service (alarm call + suspicious circumstances).

A few times and all of them have been very nice.

This is all very reassuring. The way our duty manual has us treating them with kid gloves, it makes them look like they'll be huge pains in the ***.

Interesting stuff! I went and read up on Diplomatic Immunity in the US. Foreign Diplomats can still be given traffic tickets, but can not be arrested or detained. What happens if they do something serious like kill someone or something truly evil?

If they have true diplomatic immunity, you can detain them and the State Department will send someone over to escort them back to the Embassy.

They will get a nasty letter from State and will likely be returned home to be dealt with.

It should all be in your General Orders

If it is something truly bad, their home country can revoke their diplomatic immunity and allow them to be arrested.

A former Republic of Georgia diplomat, whose nation waived his immunity, was sentenced Friday to seven to 21 years in prison for the death of a Maryland teenager in a car crash.
