What's the purpose of wanting to go? Putting a quasi deadline indicates there is some specific reason, school project? Applying? Etc. May help some to come forward...

Yeah, I did put that it is for class but I'll be more specific. I am required to either go on a ride along and write a paper for an Enforcement class that I am taking at Cal State Fullerton. The city that I reside in is backlogged with applicants and won't be able to take me out until the semester is over. I checked with the other departments around here and will only take me on a ride along if I'm either a resident of the city or an applicant. If anybody has any leads on a department that would take non-residents or any officers that are willing to take me out please let me know. Thanks

You could always just make up a story that you went on a ride a long. It's not like the college professor is going to read your paper anyway....

The main topic of the essay is to observe a patrol offer and their method of policing or their interactions with the community. I do have the option of observing another form of policing such as detective investigations but would require special permission. I would think that a deputy in a courtroom would be more towards Corrections but I will ask the professor if I have no other choice. Thank you for the suggestions though.

Haha, she is one of the professors that would every student essay. Her husband is a reserve deputy so they could be viewing this thread as we speak.

It always amazed me getting phone calls from people who said their professor in such and such a class was requiring a ride along. Their professor cannot require the agency to do anything. Then they pretty much wanted to dictate the terms of the ride along. I used to have a speech I would give them over the phone, "This is not a Friday evening of entertainment, it is a learning experience, you will be riding with a real live law enforcement officer. Dress appropriately, feel free to ask questions but remember, this is that officer's work day and the officer has the discretion to terminate the ride along at any time."

I had a reserve officer ride along with me one time and at the end of the night he actually had the nerve to say he was disappointed with riding with me because he wanted a little bit more action during the course of a shift."

I was never big on ride alongs. Many agencies have or have started Citizens Academies. I would encourage somebody to go this route.
