My cousin is a Sherrif in AZ, and is coming out to visit CA. Does his law enforcement credentials let him concealed carry in CA, or at least travel with a loaded handgun in his vehicle? Or is he considered and average joe?

and HR 218

I wouldn't dream of putting 7 round mags in if I visited one of those new California states.Comment

His commission card (creds) will be good, and in my experience he will have zero hassles in his travels. I usually carry my pistols and rifles (both duty and off duty ones) in California and other states at least once a month. I don't sweat the mag restrictions, but am more careful about not printing and stuff since we don't have to usually worry about that in AZ.Comment

My wifes uncle use to travel to California from South Dakota to pick up prisoners quite often.
LAPD would meet him at the airport take his weapon and return it at the airport on his departure.
He was the elected Sheriff of Davidson countyComment

LEOSA doesn't address magazine capacity. That said, a legitimate out of state LEO isn't going to have a problem in CA. We are not New York or New Jersey.
Any LEO who is qualified under LEOSA is legally able to carry. All they need is their department ID indicating they are a peace officer. Retired LEO need to have proof of annual qualification to be qualified under LEOSA.LASD Retired

LEOSA does not address magazine capacity, but from the FOP website:
Am I also exempt from State laws prohibiting the possession or use of “high
capacity” magazines?
No. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has ruled that State and local laws and regulations applying to magazines do apply and the exemption provided by LEOSA applies only to firearms and ammunition. As others have said, I doubt that he'd have any issues. But all he needs is a shooting and a DA that takes gun laws seriously. Better to avoid the potential headache.Last edited by bigger hammer; 09-16-2013, 9:19 AM.And who comes to our aid in times of peril?
