This is why ALL suspects need to be handcuffed with wrists facing OUTWARD, handcuff key hole facing UPWARD and cuffs cinched down SNUG to TIGHT (aka: uncomfortable). With what I described, nobody can get out of that cuffed position. However, it MUST be exactly as described above.

And anyone who handcuffs in front is a fool, moron, and lazy.

            Agreed all above.

Who is this marketed to? Parolees?

There are some very limber felons who are able to move their arms which are handcuffed behind them to the front. They slide their joined arms to one side and simply bring them down while bringing their legs up and "jump rope"...handcuffs are now in front.

I have a hobble with me and with that warning, this particular individual decided on playing nice.

Yes, unfortunately I have seen a lot of people slip the cuffs to the front. Proper snug cuffing should inhibit that to a degree. Hobbles work great too.

What is a hobbie, and all handcuff keys are the same?

I had a female parolee one time, 10-15 in the back seat. She was double jointed on her thumb. I had a Sgt watching her while I searched her car. Next thing I know that Sgt. was standing next to me. watching my search. When I turned around, she was gone! Found her a couple blocks away, but it was a great lesson...

This handcuff key thing won't be a bad thing to buy for any police officer. When I went to the police academy our recruit training officer Jim Edison a retired CHP always talked about having a handcuff hidden on the duty belt of some where else that the officer or partner could get too.

His reasoning was when he was a rookie CHP Officer in the Sacramento area two CHP Officers were surpised by a man with a gun on a vehicle stop. The suspect made one CHP Officer handcuff the other CHP Officer. If one of the CHP Officers would have had a hidden handcuff key they may have been able to get unhandcuffed and have more of a fighting chance.

Both officers were eventually shot by the suspect. I know that one officer died but I don't know about the second officer.

                        Just something to think about.

Most handcuffs are all keyed alike, I would say 99% of handcuffs would all open with the same key. It makes it very easy when transporting prisoners and other stuff to have keyed a like. It would be a pain if they weren't keyed a like.

Hobbie, is talking about a hobble. What the hobble does is on combative prisoners you can basically tie there feet / legs together as to restrict the movement of the person from kicking and fighting.

So I wonder if the first person who finds one of these on a search will be able to charge for an attempted escape 836.6 b. I would think the intent is there, by the location of the possession. Obviously if it is in a pocket that won't work, but attached to the back belt loop or back of the pants, I think you could make a strong argument for it. I know after seeing the video if I was still working I'd double check that area. Need to get this out as briefing training to as many people as we know, if nothing else to keep someone from getting hurt. I know I have directed some of my friends to it to pass on.

Benjamin, both officers died. As you roll eastbound into Sacramento, you'll see that causeway dedicated to two CHP officers. It'd those two who were killed there.
