    Got a speeding ticket question

I got a speeding ticket the other day, no arguing about that. But the chp who gave me the ticket wrote me up for 79 in a 55! I wasn't watching my speedo but unless the Tahoe I was in turned into a Lamborghini I don't think I got anywhere close to 79. I was friendly to the officer, I'd met him before when we had a car crash into one of my vineyards, but I asked if I could see the radar because 79 didn't seem right. He told me that the chp no longer shows speed to people because they are integrated into the cars and I would have to get into his car and that's a no-no! When did this start happening?

If I challenge it in court does the officer have to bring in some kind of reading or something to prove it or is it just my word vs his in court? I'm just curious who keeps the officers accountable when writing tickets? He could have written me up for 95 and there would be no way I could prove him wrong.

Thanks for any help you guys can give. And please don't start with the you were speeding so quit b****ing and pay the ticket! Not arguing that I was speeding, just arguing what speed I was written up for. Stay safe out there.

The guy that got was aways off, by the time I got to him I was doing 65 and tried to get under that, but he lit me up right after. He said he got me at 79 when I passed some cars maybe a half mile before I got to him, and that he noticed I went from 65 to 55 pretty quick when I saw him which I did. Not denying I was speeding, ill take the hit and do my traffic school if I can, but I also heard any violation over 20mph and you can't do traffic school. Thanks

Some places now have online traffic school, and I think some also have comedy traffic school!
      Sorry, not sorry.

By the time you saw him it was too late. He probably had a reading on your vehicle long before you noticed him. As far as the speed goes. If you have larger than stock wheels your speedometer will read lower than your actual speed.

If I were you I'd take traffic school. Sometimes I've seen a judge lower the cost of the ticket if you pled guilty for a bail reduction.

        Good luck man.

If he can see you, he can lock onto you. Some units have rear mounted antenna and can easily pick you up as you overtake him.

          LIDAR is even more precise.

Like I said, I'm not arguing that I was speeding, he definitely got me. But there is no way I got to 79 passing one car! And when I did get to him I was doing 65 and tried to slow down. He said he got me aways back. I'm just curious if it could have been a previous reading that didn't get cleared out or something like that. He was a real nice guy, told me about how sophisticated the system was which seemed interesting.

From what I heard they use lasers now and are more accurate. Anything is possible but what does it matter tell the judge what you gotta say and that's that. Maybe the dude won't show up and your free to go (does that work on a speeding violation?)

Its completely possible that you were going 80 and he caught you just as you started slowing down, and by the time you were at 65 its too late. Like you said... you "think". Must have not been paying all that much attention

If you're not an Leo and not here to help me with my question please stop posting! I know the Tahoe can do 80+, I'm trying to figure out if the reading could have been wrong and who verifies it! Does the officer have to bring in some form of proof that goes along with my citation or what. Your stories of how you got pulled over one time are cool but start your own thread if you want to talk about them.

No he does not have to bring in some form of proof. It's your word agaist his and the judge will go by who is the most credible. Since you don't really know how fast you were going, but simply don't think you were going 79 what do you think is going to happen?

With your attitude, I think that I can safely say that I nor any of the LEOs here are going to assist you in beating a speeding ticket that you clearly deserved. If you want technical information on radar or lidar, a google seach will give you what you want. Good luck in court.

I appreciate the answers I've got here. I'm trying to keep this from turning into an OT style thread! Everybody in here is quick to assume that they know best and don't want to listen to anything I've asked. I was just curious if it could have been a simple mistake of not clearing the radar from a previous stop? Instead all you say is pay the ticket or you're screwed deal with! I've gone to court for a ticket before, didn't know that they didn't have to bring any proof. Thanks for that info. I'm not trying to offend anybody but when the thread began to go off topic it's frustrating.

Honestly, your comments make it sound like you are the one that made the mistake and don't have a clue as to how fast you were going. I have seen the exact same story play out in court over a hundred times. It's really quite simple, the officer knows exactly how fast you were going and according to your own post, you only think that you weren't going that fast.

As soon as I had passed the car I slowed from 72-73 down to 65 where I set the cruise control and got caught no more than 30 seconds later. The Tahoe is all stock so I know the speedo wasn't off. Do I know exactly the speed? No I don't. I do know that i never went over 73. But the 6mph discrepancy is what threw me off when he wrote the ticket. Didn't know that officers didn't have to show the radar anymore and I was just curious if since they no longer show radar if some other form of verification would be presented in court. Thanks for the answers. Guess ill just take my chances in court since this thread has fallen apart. Sad that even in the Leo forum we can't keep a topic coherent an in topic.

And the only reason I called VW a troll is cause he went to another thread and was joking with me. I thought it was funny but I wanted to keep this on point to get some answers.

I gave you legitimate answers from experience, which was also backed up by others here... yes I did give you a non needed story but I'm bored and cant sleep and it brought up a memory I thought I'd share.

Btw, from my phone, calguns page does not mention the sub forum, I look at new posts and for all I know every thread is on OT.

You do not need to get sassy I answered some of your questions. Then you try to say that you only wanted to know how the radar system works. I also mentioned they are now lasers... seriously stop complaining, your questions are answered.

Also how do you know your speedo works 100% accurate? Most cars aren't. By a few mph. Tire size play, not all tire manufacturers have the exact same dimension just because they are listed as the same size. Tire pressure plays a role, wear on the speedo itself.. if speedo read 73, good chance you were really going 75-76 due to mechanical, there may have been a quick moment you jumped 3mph. Due to your foot being so heavy.
