Beggers can't be choosers, especially in this market. If you get hired, then the academy will not be too bad for you. Believe me, in a really busy station/office, five years fly by really quick. I am fifteen years in and it only seemed like yesterday that I was sworn in; I have ten years left and am eligible for retirement.

If he's as nit-picky as he sounds, I would think he will find a reason to be unhappy where ever he goes.
I did 25 years with LAPD and loved every day until they made Parks chief.
After that, I started counting my days til I could retire.

The general feeling about the current applicant pool at my dept is that there are less people who want to be cops and more people who just want a stable government job with benefits and a pension

Believe me, that is true of every law enforcement agency everywhere. I work with foreign LE everyday, and usually we go out after work and BS about the job. Every conversation we have ends like this: It seems like the new crop of coopers do want to work nights, weekends, or get call outs because it cramps their lifestyles. It's actually pretty depressing when you think about it. I have sacrificed a lot for the job, and although a lot of times sucked, I wouldn't change a lot about it, except I want the old breed of pragmatic managers back.

If I ever decide to get out of probation and go for a PD, LAPD is high up on the list with others. Experience is important and I think they have a lot to offer, no matter what the pay is; I've lived off less. No matter where you end up, count it as good because your working in your field of choice. Just my two pennies.
(I said "out" of probation not "off") ;-)

We have had a few laterals come over from LAPD. All the ones I worked with have been good cops that were tired of the micromanagement that occurs within the dept. I would not like working a 2 man car at all. I have too much crap on the passenger seat lol!

I'm not anti-LEO, and I'm not judging anybody that might happen to be LAPD, but if I was considering an LEO career, I'd probably reconsider if I couldn't do it without spending time with that department. JMHO.
So you throw rocks at LAPD. What about F--------, R----, C----, W--- C-----a, et al. Lot of departments do "stupid". I have been a CA lawman since 1981 and you do even comprehend, "stupid" until I tell you what "stupid" is.

Lot of kids watch TV and want to be a cop and they go to their first department and reality "b" slaps them and they go to another and then it sinks in. What you think is the job or career is far from expectations. Also on a large department you have a problem you will get it resolved. On a small department, who you going to complain to? The Chief's son-in-law, a.k.a. Captain of personnel. Good luck sonny

Same here, I left the Marines to get a $23 a month pay raise. I never thought about being a cop but the Marines said my aptitude test said MP #1. It was the greatest job and really black and white, arrest bad guys. Then being a civilian cop it appears so many, 80% is just here for a civil service job.

You're assuming you will even be hired. Apply to many agencies and maybe you will get hired, maybe you wont. Why are you self sponsored now and not waiting till you get hired by an agency and have them put you through? Seems unnecessary if yiu think you will be hired?

Not only that, but they now have a two-tier retirement plan for new recruits. So you're pay is less, and you'll have a less generous pension when you're through.

Remember the days (way back in 2007 ) when they we're paying LAPD coppers a $10,000 finder's fee if they sponsored a recruit that made it past probation? Man, have times changed!
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
                      Come on...what harm??

What I REALLY miss is the paid overtime. Only got to enjoy 2 years of that before they took it away. Sure miss those 3-4k checks.......hell my wife misses it more than me.

Pretty much sums it up. Don't like your new supervisor, change watches or transfer the hell out. So easy to avoid pencil pushing *******s.
