I see both sides of this issue.
I have certainly dealt with a number of LEOs that were friendly, helpful and respectful over many years I'm 57 years old and have had my share of encounters with law enforcement officers, I have never been arrested and only detained briefly until things got sorted out.
I will mention that I'm now at an all time low point of my life with the actions and attitudes of many, not all LEOs.
It seems that there is a general distrust of the civilian population by many officers on the street and it seems these officers dont seem to care what people think of them.
Law enforcement officers will never get the complete trust and cooperation from the general public when they are acting like some sort of Jack booted thug.
Like any population it only takes a few bad apples to make lump all in the same barrel of bad apples.
I think more agencys need to work on their public relations within the communities they service, and they need to weed out the Rambo types or put them on a deak job at the DMV where those attitudes are the norm and accepted.
Just my 2 cents worth, but perception has become reality.

You know Andy & Barney or the people in Petticoat Junction WILL NEVER see what a LAPD or LA Sheriff has seen. Big city has a million different things going on. You speak to a woman in public while on duty and another woman five feet away wants to know why you did not speak to her, your a racist. Why you wrote a ticket to that guy and not the other guy, your a bigot. You finish working a crime scene where an infant was murdered by the mother's boyfriend, blood and baby brains everywhere and you want to eat a sandwich after 6 1/2 hours on scene. You get your break at McDonalds and every citizen wants to talk to you. You want to take a break, BUT someone wants to point out a double parked car, another tells you about the homeless guy peeing in the alley, someone wants you to get their keys out of their locked car.

I have been doing the cop job for 30 years and it is not for everybody. Of course a small town with no gangs or drugs would be easy, the whole good old boy thing. YMMV

The rest looked me up and down like I was some kind of feral animal.
Remember in December 2009 the four officers murdered in a coffee shop in WA? As a cop your life can go from 0 MPH to 100 MPH in a second. How many times in your life you have been randomly attacked? YOLO

Perfectly understandable points. Something I have noticed tho, which I pointed out earlier, is that most of the boots are really nice.. but after a while they become cold. I guess it is part of working in a big city where u see alot of ****ed up stuff. I just feel like if a job like that is gonna change my demeanor so drastically I wudnt do it. I started the LAPD app process, but didnt like what was going on behind closed doors so I went the military route instead.

I don't know how old you are, but go get some life experience and revisit this post if you ever get hired. After you revisit this post after getting hired, post in it 2 to 5 years after.

There's a lot of truth to the saying, "don't criticize someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes".

Your posts and questions really do show your lack of life experience. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say you are honestly asking a question out of ignorance rather than criticizing.

Im not really criticizing, I understand to some point why they act the way they do. I guess the thing im trying to get at is that if cops shud try to kill em with kindness. If you know ppl dont like you, try being nice to them and make em feel stupid. It works all the time.

Your response just proved Falconis' point about a lack of life experience. "Killing them with kindness" doesn't always work. No knock on you, but just because you have an idea of how an officer should act doesn't mean the idea is realistic. Having an opinion about a topic is different from having an informed opinion about the same topic.

I was an MP for three years. Stay true to yourself. Watch out for the MPs who want to be pimps, drug dealers and hustlers. We had a lot of people that went from MP to inmate status and they bring as many others down to save their own butt

Why are cops so cold? Prolonged and repeated exposure to the elements...

                      Read that how you like....

Exactly !!! I remember a rookie who thought he could give a homeless guy a $1. You know how many people came to him for a hand out whenever they saw him? He sells insurance at his daddy's insurance company in O.C. now.

                              To the OP:

LASD has about 9,000 sworn deputies. I don't know how many of them you have encountered. Except couple of the guys I worked with in last 27 years, rest of them are pleasant and good natured guys. I don't know where you got the impression that the LA cops are cold.

Sheriffs are a lot nicer than LAPD. They enforce the laws more, but they seem to be friendlier. I lived in the 562 area with nothing buy sheriffs for alot of years.
