Are there any fellow cal gunners who currently work for the LAPD? I have my background interview next month and just want any tips and what I will be expecting working for the department? I'm extremely excited and nervous!

LAPD?

For the record, I don't work for LAPD, but I have good friends working there and the standards are very high. Your credit, your record and everything else will be closely examined. Do not lie under *any* circumstance about anything no matter how insignificant you think it is. Do not omit anything because your background investigator will dig it up. Be a stand up guy and take responsibility for everything you've done in your life to this point.sigpicNRA Life Member

Incredibly good advice, not just for the LAPD but any job and life in general. For the record, I don't work for LAPD, but I have good friends working there and the standards are very high. The pay is horrible with the new 20% cut for new hires. If I was hired under the new pay scale I would have applied somewhere else.Comment

Don't let the naysayers scare you off. Every agency has its flaws, but LAPD is, overall, a good agency.
Probably the #2 law enforcement agency in Los Angeles County.

LAPD just gets a lot of bad press, especially when incidents like Christopher Dorner come around. Each department has its own 'personality' and that either agrees with your own or doesn't.
I just had my backgrounds interview with San Joaquin County Sheriff the other day. For me the BI went through every line and entry of my PHS as well as everything that I had talked about during my polygraph examination. It was my opportunity to explain and clarify things in detail before moving on in the process. The above advice to be absolutely honest is the truest statement you'll get. Nobody is perfect, and everyone has either done something or otherwise screwed something up. You are only human and they are aware of that.Last edited by Thanatos2203; 07-18-2013, 12:33 AM.sigpicComment

Be truthful in your background. The investigation is done in a thorough manner and continues throughout your time as a Probationer.
The background runs before you enter the Academy, during the entire Academy training program, and until you complete Probation for a total of 18+ months. I have known several candidates who were deselected during the Academy and on Probation for background issues.
Good luck to you in the process. To support the First Responder with the tactics, training and technology to ensure operational success.
