    SDSO Hiring

I see all the posts on here from people who want to start a career in law enforcement. Well, the San Diego County Sheriff is taking applications for both LE and Detentions until August 1. I can tell you that LE is very competitive, but detentions is looking for a ton of people. To apply, go here: http://www.joinsdsheriff.net/

I saw the pay scale and it seems little low especially when San Diego county living cost is $$$$$.

SDPD, and SDSO are losing experienced officers/deputies to smaller agencies with more money. They've offered a 10k singing bonus to leave SDPD, hard to compete with that offer.

I'm sure that's part of the reason for hiring.

As Bojack stated, Pay scale is low. Cost of living in SD area is really high. Also, does the 90% acceptance score apply to Detensions as it does for Deputies??

Some of you on here are missing the point. If a agency is hiring you should attempt to get hired by them. Do a couple of years with that agency and then move on if needed.

I am from the Central Valley and for years the Fresno Police Department has paid a lot more than the other agencies around it. What a lot of people have done though is go to work for the smaller less paying departments get a couple years expierence and then move to the hiring paying police department.

A lateral applicant will have a easier time most times getting on with a more elite agency. Some of the other ones that went to the smaller under paying agencies have liked it better and said. Departments with high turn over for pay issues, make it easier to get seniority than a elite agency. One of the guys I went to the police academy with, stayed at small department and within 12 years he became the Police Chief.

I have to agree with benjamin's post re just getting hired. It is a lot easier to get hired as a lateral with a basic or intermediate POST then a newbie with no le experience.

That said, the others are also correct about the pay scale for both agencies, but that is nothing new. I applied for the PD in 1974 and they were both two of the lowest paid then too. I later worked with one of our deputies (LASD) in the late 1970s who had left us and worked for both of them, only to return due to the low pay.

Actually, since the housing meltdown, the cost of living in SD is actually lower than OC or LA. There are a bunch of places where you can get decent housing in the $300-400K range. And no, the 90% score only applies to LE. Detentions is a different academy and much easier to qualify for.
