Taser Vs. Firearm threshold?

I have a question about Taser use and thought I'd get an answer straight from the folks who use them most:

I am familiar with the fact that using a firearm on someone without going to prison afterwards requires you to be in legitimate fear for yours or someone else's life or to defend the same against a reasonably perceived threat of great bodily harm and that this is the standard set by law no matter if you are LEO or a regular Joe.

What if anything from above differs in the use of a Taser against a person other than the fact the person you shoot with it will be alive to sue you afterwards?

Look up Bryan vs Mcpherson. This is case law regarding deployment of the taser.

The case considered whether MacPherson’s use of a taser during a routine traffic stop violated Bryan's Fourth Amendment rights. The majority opinion, written by Kim McLane Wardlaw, declared that the use of the taser in this situation could be considered excessive force.

Not much is different. Taser can be lethal as well.

Depends on who is using the Taser - LEO or non-LEO. Bryan v MacPherson only applies to LE usage...

As long as your within your depts policy and adhering within federal case law and have no ill intention you should be fine. I have no want or reason to tazer someone who is not well deserving of it.

Exactly. Essentially though, you are going to have to be in some kind of lawful self defense situation in which you fear for your safety or the safety of friends/family/etc. Every use of force scenario is different and none of us are your leach, I mean lawyer, but essentially the threat doesn't have to be as grave to justify the use of an electronic control device (ie, a Taser) versus a firearm.
