    Setting up a ride along.

I'm setting up a ride along through a Harbor police agency. I was offered several options 1) Patrol, 2) Harbor Police boat.

I've done patrol quite a few times with different agencies. But I've never been on a boat before with police.

    Help me decide?

Go for the boat patrol. Not only will it be a unique experience, it will show a different aspect of le, even tho you will deal with a lot of the same problems as the leos on land; i.e., DUI, DV, Battery, injuries, etc.

Yeah. I was somewhat skeptical about the harbor patrol boat because I heard from somebody it was " uneventful". I've done plenty of patrol's before, but your right in saying it will show me a " unique experience". Either way I am grateful for either of the two.

Boat patrol sounds fun, or at least interesting. Also, if you ever are offered a chance to go for a ride in an air unit, do it. One of my more memorable ride along was in an air unit.

Damn. That sounds awesome At my old flight school, our hanger did instruction for LE in the area. I should have networked with one of them.

I didn't work Aero Bureau, but I did have the opportunity to ride in a number of helicopters during my career. I was in the rear seat of a 4 place one, going from one shooting to another in different patrol areas. Another deputy and I went in a Sikorsky from our Long Beach Headquarters to pick up a prisoner and a 5150 and her young son from Catalina. We landed, but never left the ship, so I can still say I've never been to Catalina.

Two of the more interesting ones were the two seater with no door and flying in circles for over 30 minutes at a bank robbery scene and the Chinook transporting 31 of us to the scene of the Northridge earthquake.

I kept on checking my seat restraint to ensure it was tight in the former and I worked the latter for over 2 weeks. Sitting at the rear of the bench seat, I was able to get some detailed photos of the devastation. The pilot left the ramp partly open and I could see the damaged freeways and buildings. My photos were film, so no posting.

I came to the conclusion that a chopper going straight was a better ride than one flying in circles for a long time.

Too bad those prisoners couldn't have waited. You could gotten a drink and a buffalo burger in Avalon When I say " drink" I mean water on the rocks

The 5150 was strapped to a gurney and needed to be transported asap to Harbor General, otherwise that would have been nice.

What a buzz kill. I talked to a LASD Deputy in Avalon, they ride those electronic Segway scooters. I asked him how does a Deputy get assigned to the Island. He laughed and responded " after 16 years of hard work and good connections".

Here's a pic of their jeeps and the station I took.

Do the boat patrol... and do try to do a fly along with an air unit. Summertime can be a bit warm depending on the type of aircraft, but I guarantee you will have a blast.

Worked a marine unit as a part time assignment for 12 years and you'll probably just go for a nice boat ride. Maybe a rescue call if you get lucky.

My brother in law worked there for a few years. Your skills get really rusty. Ideal assignment if you are burnt out and waiting for retirement.

Duh? If you want to work for a Harbor Agency, you need to do the boat thing.

Because the reason you are doing the ride along is because you want to work with them, correctmundo?
