I'm a retired LEO. I was told that even though I live in CA, I can purchase a non-California compliant weapon in another state and have the shipped to CA and buy the weapon. Does anyone know if this is true?

Not correct. Once retired, you can not DROS an off roster handgun.

To add to Ron's post; You can purchase an off roster handgun from an active leo who may have purchased one and has decided he/she didn't want the gun any longer. That has to be a PPT done thru a FFL and face to face.
Another method that some are doing is a Single Shot Exemption (SSE). This is done thru a FFL. If you use the CGN Google search on the right side of the upper blue bar above, you will find more info on that method. Be prepared to pay extra for that method.
You will sometimes find off roster handguns for sale in the Marketplace here. I've seen two XD-s pistols for sale, but the prices were at a premium. The MSRP is a little over $600 I believe and the prices were over $900 here. For now, that seems to be the market price for that particular gun.Comment
