    Department Shooting Comps

What happened to the shooting competitions that departments used to partake in? When did things change?

I know it used to be a big deal to be the department's top shot, I'm just wondering what changed and how we can bring them back.

With our Department, it all came down to funding.

We used to have the annual charity "Shoot out" at High Noon up at Wayside. It started out as LASD VS. LAPD, but was then opened up to any law enforcement team.

With budget cuts and staffing issues, the range staff was not able to open the range for the competetion, which was held on a Sunday. All the range staff are off duty on Sundays and there was no funding to pay them to come in. The Department regulations are very specific as to the number of range staff per shooter at any given time.

It was always a great day. They even had a trophy that was a horse's behind for the lowest score of the day. It was a perpetual trophy, so your name went on it and it was displayed all year, making you want to shoot better.

How does the competition work? Specific departments? Do you have to be sponsored by your department or can you join with officers from your department on your own?
          Sounds like fun.
