    LEO purchasing guns

Hi guys, so I have a LEO friend who is planning to buy from a retired LEO. The gun he wants to buy is an IMI Uzi, imported by Action Arms back before the ban. It has a telescoping shoulder stock, and I think a permanent barrel extension. I think original barrel length was a shade over 10". My friend is LAPD if that matters. I believe the overall length is under 30", but I haven't measured myself. Will he need any special permission to PPT this weapon? Can any FFL PPT this gun, or do they need to go somewhere special? Thank you very much guys. I debated whether to ask in the FFL section, but I figured you guys would know. Thanks all.

A few things come to mind. Sbr and AW.lets take the SBR out of the picture for now. If it is listed on the aw ban and or have aw features then he would need approval from his department in order to purchases an AW. If its not on the aw ban then the easier way to do is put a bullet button on it. You have to make sure the make and model is not on the Aw list in order to do this. Also if the retired Leo registered it he was have to deregister the AW. The SBR thing gets tricky and ill let someone else chime in

You have lots of problems with what your describing. The orininal IMI Uzi was banned as an assault weapon. If the retired leo registered it, that part is ok but I don't know how he would be able transfer a registered AW to another officer without having to jump through some hoops. Someone will come along and explain the process or clarify if its even possible. The other parts that may be an issue are the 10 inch barrel and the folding stock. If it was an uzi pistol with a 10 inch barrell then that would be legal but once you add the stock you created a short barreled rifle. If it was a uzi rifle with the folding stock then that would be ok but once you add a 10 inch barrel, once again a short barreled rifle. I remember the original uzi rifles came with a folding stock and a 16 inch barrell but also had a dummy non functioning 10 inch barrel replica that could be put in for the cool looks. So ultimmately based on what your buddy has, there couled be some state issues and or some federal issues. Good luck.

I don't think it's transferable even LEO to LEO as there are no exceptions for us. There may be some exceptions for family or death transfers but have to check the PC. LEOs don't have many exceptions with Ca. gun laws except for 30 day rule, gun locks/safe, and 10 round mag rule. Any AW you buy through your agency cannot be transfer to you until it's Ca. compliant. Ca. legislatiors apparently don't trust cops that much either.

I would say that the olnly way to transfer it is for the retire to sell it to a california permitted AW dealer and then the dealer can sell it to the officer with a department letter. This would negate any person to person transfer issues. But the dealer would have to make his profit since he would own the rifle and could sell it to whomever he wants. I think the more important issues are the possible short barreled rifle issues if that rifle trully does have a short functioning barrel.

Thank you for all the advice gents. I presented my friend with this thread and he's pretty much in agreement that this will be too difficult. LtMike70, your advice with the AW dealer sounds intriguing. But the caveat might make it too difficult to find a dealer so amiable. Again, I thank you all for the info. If anything comes of the transfer I'll let you guys know, just in case you're curious.
