    CCW Question

    Hello,

I turned in an application for a CCW in LA county about 75 days ago. I submitted it with my license to carry an exposed firearm, my guard card and a DD-214 showing awards for valor and extensive experience in combat, in an actions on, combat arms capacity.

Could anyone give me a percentage chance on it getting approved? I have an amazing job lined up for a year from now that requires a CCW and the experience I have already. I was very clear on my application that I only needed it for employment. I guess this is stupid to ask now, but is there any chance I could amend my application to only carry a gun while I'm working? Or any way to become more qualified?

The detective said he'd stop by my residence to verify I live there, but he hasn't contacted me since I went to the station so I'm not sure if he stopped by while I wasn't home, or something. I know it's historically hard to get this in CA, but this job would be a huge windfall for me and basically make going to school feasible instead of just possible.

    Thanks in advance.

Frankly, the statistics of being approved in LA County are highly stacked against you.

Your chances highly improve if you move to the jurisdiction of an issuing authority which will approve you under the conditions you describe.

Best case, you might be able to get a verbal green-light from a non-contract city in LA County (i.e. one with a municipal police department) and move to that jurisdiction and apply.

Other options might include moving to an adjoining county with more favorable issuance policies. Both San Bernadino and Kern counties have an excellent reputation for issuance to the average Joe. Riverside, Ventura & Orange County also issue, but with varying degrees of success.

As I understand it, all of the above issuing agencies might have issues with issuing for employment purposes.

Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to your question. Ultimately you will probably need to investigate your options via a long list of potential issuing authorities.

The first sentence is absolutely correct. If you are a celebrity, a retired judge or ADA or have donated a lot of money to his campaign chest, Baca will probably issue you a ccw. If not, forget it. Also, the COP of a non contract city will advise you to contact the Sheriff, which means back to Baca.

The second statement is incorrect as I have explained in the paragraph above. The answer, at least as it applies to L.A. County is very clear. I saw a You Tube video of Baca speaking about ccws in L.A. County some time ago. He stated he felt the less than 500 issued was a reasonable amount. Mind you, there are approximately 10 million residents in the county, so you can do the math and determine what percentage he believes is reasonable.

BTW, for some backround since you are fairly new; I worked for LASD and tho retired for 10yrs., I believe this has remained his policy. There are others here who presently work for it and others who have retired and I can safely say they would probably say the same if asked.

Ha, I actually initially sent my application to LASD and they sent my application back in an unsealed envelope, without the $10 I had to include and gave me some form signifying their receipt of my money and informing me that I didn't live in their jurisdiction.

I guess I should have been tipped off to the low chances of success when he said the fastest way would be to go through the academy and become a reserve police officer. I guess I wouldn't mind it, but I'm not really trying to be a new guy again. One of my buddies got out and moved to Colorado 45 days ago and already has a concealed carry license!

Thanks for the advice and expertise in any case.

Move to Arizona and your first day, you'll be allowed to carry concealed without a piece of paper saying so. Provided your not a felon or have ever been 5150'd.

Everybody wants to be a millionaire and of course everybody thinks they are over qualified.
