Is this a TFH conspiracy theory?

Frequently in my area police stop, search and arrest people carrying drugs and large quantities of cash moving up and down the I5 corridor.

I have a friend that works on police vehicles and he claims that some officers have told him they have devices that can detect large quantities of $100 bills in some of their vehicles. I call tin foil hat on that and say the stops are based upon racial and vehicle profiling; most of the stops are hispanics and often with older vehicles with out of state plates as far as I can tell. (Not being racist, I'm hispanic as one of my grandfather's was from Spain) and I'm not against profiling as if it looks, walks and talks like a duck its got a pretty high likelihood of actually being a duck.

So is my friend falling for and spreading some or is their some truth to what he's been told? This article from 2011 makes it appear that it's a technology that is highly desired and being worked on at some level http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/...7436BX20110504

As a side note, some people don't trust banks and do prefer cash, is it illegal to possess more than x amount of it?

although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"

I would say no to the scanning for large amounts of money. I know there are mobil scanners that can run passing cars to see if they are stolen, expired, and
owner information. The owner can then be run for license status, and warrants.
Most other info could come from the officer's training and probable cause that he developes.

Based on what I know about drug interdiction, there are signs that the trained cop can look for to detect a "load car" that involve only the use of his or her eyeballs. Sometimes this detection is aided by confidential information about certain vehicles or activity. But $100 bill detectors? I haven't heard of such a thing, apart from the occasional story about a "gold digger".

I am unaware of any law prohibiting the possession of large quantities of cash. The only thing I can think of is the import or export of US currency or monetary instruments over $10,000 having to be declared.

I believe there are also fed (RICO?) laws against making a single unreported withdrawal from a bank of $10k or greater. I think there is even a conspiracy to avoid reporting charge if you make a series of unreported withdrawals totaling greater then $10k.
