Some counties have a sticker that they place on the back of the check. It has the inmate's photo, name, booking number, and the jail's number for conformation if need be.

If as you suggest, you can afford and are willing to pay for a roof over his head, set it up so they send you the bill for rent and you pay it on whatever schedule fits (weekly, bi monthly, etc.) as for food, provided he does not have a drug problem, prepaid visas might work.

Most jails have gone "cashless" to prevent inmates from getting robbed by other inmates. When you put money on their books, they get credit in their account.
