Huge problem regarding my Sig P226 TACOPS (update: problem fixed)

I took delivery of my Sig P226 TACOPS which I intended to use on-duty. It is a gun my department authorizes us to use.

But wait.....there is a HUGE problem. I cannot find a Safariland holster which works with the gun due to the beavertail. I called Safariland direct and they advised me that they do not produce any holsters which accomodate the beavertail.

Basically, the hood (retention strap) will not fully close and lock in place. I was going to PM Yzernie and someone else regarding mag pouches, but I am not even sure if I am going to be able to use this gun.

Anyone have a solution or know anyone who can modify the strap without compromising the integrity of the retention features built into the holster? The holster has level II retention, but I added a hood guard.

Don't know if yzernie can help you at this time, his son is in the hospital due to a dirt bike injury.

Sorry to hear about Yzernie's son. I hope he will be ok.

There are many custom holster makers out there..
Or you can take an existing holster to a boot maker or repair shop and have them modify it to fit.

Its really hard to beat Safariland for a duty rig. I've tried a number of different companies out there, and for the money and for the purpose the 6280 style holster is the right piece of kit for the job.

If it was me I'd look into some kind of modification to the Safariland. Consider removing material from the hood itself so that it will accomodate the beavertail - assuming you don't have to remove so much that it becomes impractical. If that doesn't work, consider having the beavertail bobbed a bit so that it fits the holster. I carry a P226 SCT at work (no beavertail) and I've always said that if I did get an Elite or Tacops I'd probably have some of the beaver tail shaved down - this is so that I can cock the hammer if I like, and so that it would work better with the existing holsters made by Safariland. ** If you do have your weapon modified, Greyguns has a great reputation in the Sig Community, and I'd contract with them to do the work. And of course make sure your agency wont freak out about it. Some do. **

Good luck man. And if you are able to find a work-around to the problem, please post it up!

Not sure if you have a light but my holster wouldn't close with the x300 ultra. I had to remove the plastic cap on the holster

For those of you suggesting a different brand, LASD has very strict holster regulations.

Basically, it's Safariland or nothing in a duty holster.

                  *** Problem Fixed***

Thanks for all the responses. I just got home and thought I would let ya all know the problem is fixed. I took the holster back to Adamsons and brought the gun. We played with it, made a few adjustments, plus, cut off a little rubber tab (not needed) that sticks out from strap. It worked! Safariland said that none of their holsters support pistols with beavertails, nor do they plan to design any. I would have tried fixing the problem on my own I suppose, but after the answer I got from Safariland, I did not want to be refused if I had to return the holster.

The holster is the 6280-7740 model (level II retention). I the added QLS system, a thigh rig, and a hood guard. I also put a Surefire Ultra X300 light on the gun. At the top of the hood strap there is a little 1/4" nub that sticks out from the strap. We cut that off. We played with the tension screw toward the bottom of the holster to modify the way the gun seated in the holster. The gun seems to fit perfectly and retention is not affected.

Someone from our range staff said that holsters made of the same material, without a tension screw, can be loosened up using a heat gun and that will also help the gun seat differently. You just have to be careful and make sure the changes you make are very subtle until you get it right.

I am one happy camper right now. I thought I was going to have to try to return the gun or eat the $1000.

Ron-Solo is also correct in saying that our department is very specific on which holster(s) we can use while on duty. It is amazing they give us so many gun choices, but so few duty gear choices.

Thanks Drew....yes I like the folks at All State. It is just a bit far for me to drive. I wish they had an online store as well. Alll State has pretty competitive prices.

FYI I carry a p226 elite (has beaver tail) in a safariland 6360 with tlr1 and the hood closes no problem.
