LEOSA and magazines

I know a few years ago, many of us on here tried to get the LEOSA 2010 amendment to include magazines, but it was too little too late.

I was hoping we could try again.

The gun bill going through the senate right now is a great opportunity.

Although we have no idea how the final bill will turn out, a few pro-RKBA provisions are in the bill, including repealing the interstate handgun sale ban, and strengthening FOPA (interstate transport bill).

I was hoping we all could call or write members of congress to do the following things.

1. Sponsor an amendment to include "ammunition feeding devices not prohibited by federal law" in FOPA (18 USC 926(a) ) and for LEOSA (18 USC 926 b and c ).

2. If you feel brave enough, lets see if they can extend the certification requirement in subsection c from 1 year to 2 years.

I want to know what you guys think about this because this would solve the magazine issue, and since FOPA is already on track to be enhanced with this bill, it's important to be sure they include "ammunition feeding devices" because they are not explicitly protected at this point in time.

I know that the ammo preemption was added in 2010 because a lot of people contacted congress over the New Jersey issue after the original bill was passed, and they listened. Should we try the same approach for magazines?

None, that's why I'm hoping to change that. Who should we contact in the house and senate (besides our respective members based on our zip code)?

I'd guess that the person who sponsored the original legislation or the amendments, if still in office.

I live in the heart of Anti territory now. A liberal beat out Mary Bono in my district in the last election.

As weird as this sounds, Harry Reid was a cop when he was going through law school, ironically as a member of the US Capitol Police.

I think it's a great idea. As mentioned, I along with others contacted several Senators when S 1132 (http://www.gop.gov/bill/111/2/s1132) was being debated. According to my records, Senator Leahy D from Vermont was the main sponsor.

It can’t hurt if someone wrote up the problem and it was E-mailed to the appropriate Senators and other members of congress.

At the time S 1132 was being debated, I contacted both Harry Reid’s and Leahy’s office, which did nothing.

During my chat with one of Senators Reid’s staff, I mentioned that as silly as it sounded an off duty or retired Nevada cop could be prosecuted for brining a full capacity magazine into California on a weekend visit to friends or relatives. This did elicit a comment that it appeared to be a problem, but nothing more.

So, how about if someone writes up a short draft memo and we kick it around here, or we all write it up and send it to all those in congress currently involved.

I do think it would be helpful if out of state active duty cops contacted their respective representatives and explained the issue. Does anyone have any idea how to contact out of state associations?
