    Dispatch question

I live on a ranch the road coming from a public road to my house is private with two ranches sharing the road.

Where the road splits I have installed an electronic gate. I notified both EMS and Enforcement of the code to enter.

I was googling a route for a visitor to use getting to the ranch and in Google simple directions. In Yahoo there is a note Gate access required to enter this address.

Does dispatch use Yahoo? Are they the ones that added the note about gate access?

I found it interesting since I have had two visitors call this week asking about the gate.

    Any information would be appreciated.

    Bill

If you have given emergency personnel the code, they will have it noted in their computer system. You should be good to go.

No, i doubt dispatch added it to yahoo. It likely came from another source, I know our dispatch and others nearby don't share such info.

In the event you do have to call 911, I would tell the dispatcher about the gate and code, even though you previously have done so. It doesn't hurt for them to have it twice.

Perhaps entered by Google when their street-view camera vehicle encountered the gate.

Your local law enforcement agency may have a note about your gate in the premise file of their CAD system, but they wouldn't share it outside of emergency response circles.

I'd still give it to them if you called.

FD and LEO only have the keys to operate. If you use the key box the FD opens it to put your key in. We used them all over L.A. County in residential and commercial buildings and never saw one fail. This removes the guess work and communication problems. In rural areas access is guaranteed during wildland fires and also if there was a problem if you are away from home.

Some of the newer Knox boxes have radio receivers. Turn your portable or mobile radio to a preprogrammed frequency and key up. Gate opens. Kinda nice. But has to be set up in advance and you have to know the receiver is there.

I was also going to say that there is more than just Google running around collecting map data. I think there are 2 others out there (Navteq and TeleAtlas), and it looks like Yahoo buys map data from Navteq.

I ran hundreds of calls in rural areas that had locked gates or eclectic gates. We required a Knox that had a key or the combo instructions inside. Dispatch often does not get it right. There were just too many problems so we stopped taking combos or keys and stated they had to be on site at the gate. My wife dispatched for 31 years and she says it was always unpredictable when they entered combos in dispatch software instructions linked to an address.

We carried bolt cutters for locks because we often arrived before fire did. Amazing how many rural properties have a locked gate or no address visible at the entrance to the property. If you want to make sure you get a fast response and an undamaged gate or lock, make it easy for LE and EMS to access property quickly.

Might have been mentioned but most dispatchers have the ability to note special details on any address. If a call is generated to your address the special note will come up as soon as the Dispatcher enters the call information. The dispatcher will then advise responding units of the note anotated to your address. They can either verbally read the note to responding units or they will tell the officer to check the call or resident notes on their patrol car computers. This information is only privy to the dispatchers and the units they dispatch often including EMS and FIRE. These notes usually have to be approved by the Dispatch supervisor or Police Administrator. So that the dispatchers don't annotate useless or non-essential information.
