    Driving record concerns?

Hello forum LEO's, im wondering just how badly/for how long i've screwed myself in the process of getting hired with a department?

To make a long story short, A big portion of my job is driving(see 40k+ per year) and I've managed to stupidly rack up 3 points on my license. One comes off next year, the other the next year and this last one just happened in january.

I'm 27 and currently a college student.(2 AS's a criminal justice, and soon to transfer to a university to get a BS in CJ)

I'm sure i'm pretty much toast for atleast 2yrs if not more right? And is there anything i could do to try and make myself a bit more marketable in the mean time?

Besides not getting any more tickets, not much. Some departments make driving records a major issue, some not so much. You say that you have 3 points on your record, now the question is how many times did you avoid the point by going to traffic school? Don't hide anything or you will not pass a background.

twice . Needless to say, cruise control and mandatory overtime due to corporate under staffing have become my new found friends.

In a different vein; you might want to reconsider obtaining a BS in CJ. There have been many people that have come here aspiring to become a leo that have asked about a degree in CJ. The consensus from the active and retired leos, myself included, is to obtain that 4yr. degree in something else. Public Administration, Business, English, are a few suggested.

If for some reason, you decide after being hired, that le isn't for you or you don't get hired in the first place, you now have a degree that is pretty much useless for most other fields.

There was a federal leo here a couple of years ago who posted that a degree in CJ was a plus for a leo job on the Federal level. If you are considering a Federal leo job, you should research that.

Between Trickster and Retired, they have pretty much nailed it. Get your degree in Public Administration, Business with a focus on Human Resources, etc. those will get you more mileage if the LE career doesn't work out.

I meant to add the degrees I mentioned might also help your career in le if you wanted a particular assignment or wanted to promote. An academy classmate only spent about 6 months inside the inmate area of the jail we went to after the academy.

He had a Masters in English and they put him in Operations, which is outside of security. He had no contact with inmates (lucky for him). He is just now retiring as a Captain after 37yrs. in le.

I am not, of course, saying that will happen to you and I'm not saying you need a degree to promote, but it gives you an idea of what a degree that is not CJ can do for one in le. Heck, I had a BA in history with a 1 1/2yrs. of law school and I made it to sgt.
