If you are serious and want to take the plunge, sponsor yourself through an academy. (I dont recommend it, but it will make you more marketable).

Have you considered a Sheriff's department? Starting off in a facility first can get you into an agency quicker. Also it does give you valuable insight and experience on the people you will encounter on patrol. Just a thought.

How far along have you gotten in testing before you have been rejected? Without knowing why you aren't progressing further in testing it is hard to give advice on what to do to get hired.

I have been trying to contact my BI for weeks/months without any success. The last thing I was told was that my packet was going in for panel review. At this point I am unsure where the problem might be. I'll continue to probe and find out, then go from there.

I can almost garuntee you they will not tell you why you are getting dropped. It leaves them open for huge liability/lawsuits.

For San Jose PD, it's written test above 50, physical above 320, and then you are admitted to the Oral Interview after applying, among other smaller requirements (educations, convictions)

Once you pass OI, you are then put into back grounds, selected to go through the academy, FTO and become an officer. Sounds simple, but one mistake in any of those will get you booted (you get ONE chance for remedial).

I am not a peace officer. Milpitas and Santa Clara are recruiting but they are very selective, probably because they are a small department.

What he said. By far the best way to get your foot in the door. Remember just because you don't make it at one department doesn't mean you won't at another (unless you mess up BIG TIME).

Yep, getting in as a reserve is how I started.

3.5 - 4 years of applying and not getting hired, there must be something in your record that stands out as a red flag or something. You will probably need to find out what it is. Maybe your reference is not providing satisfactory opinion.

You say you're college educated? That explains why. It's a known fact that people have been rejected from police departments for being too smart and thinking for themselves. It's even gone to court and been ruled legal.

? College education is turning into a requirement at many departments, even if an unofficial one.

Since becoming a reserve officer nowadays takes the completion of a POST basic academy prior to getting on, I would still work on being hired as a regular and having them send you through the academy...
