Volunteering, good or useless ?

Hi Calgun LEO's,

I am in the hiring process with a department and just started volunteering last week. I volunteer about 3 days a week for about 4-6 hours. I decided to do it to make myself stand out as an applicant and to get my foot in the door to show that I really want this and that i'm here to put the effort and work in! I know for a fact, that I am the only applicant volunteering. My question is this, does it make a difference ? does the personnel see this ? or am I just wasting time. Any info will help ! I don't know if it really matters or not in the broad sense, but it could be the tie breaker between you and another applicant. I volunteered for three years as a military augmentee while putting myself through the academy, then got hired as a reserve pretty quick.

However, in the end, it will all come down to your exact circumstances.

I know quite a few Volunteers that are now hired officers with a department after completing their training as a volunteer. It can help your hiring, but as already stated, it will come down to the department and your exact circumstances.

It all depends on the department, but it absolutely won't hurt you. Many agencies look favorably on those who volunteer/took reserve positions before applying to become full time LEO's

Shoot, I wish it was a reserve position. I'm washing vehicles and changing light bulbs lol thanks for the info !
