    LEO awards, citations question

My stepson is getting a citation for making alot of dui arrests, according to his sister. I havent been able to chat with him, and just wanted to ask you guys is this common practice for departments? I guess he has been pretty active during his shift nabbing dui suspects.

I would ask him but we are playing phone tag and just curiuos

He is in the Irvine PD and has about 18 months in with the dept.

    Thanks for any info.

Yea need a little more clarification. Your post makes it sound like he was arrested, cited, and released for a DUI.

Yes he has pulled in a lot of dui suspects during his shift. I worded my post poorly.

There is the MADD (mothers against drunk driving) award which is given out. You get one for 50 and another for 100 I believe but don't know for certain. MADD also funds the DUI check points and tasks forces.

Haha, I thought that was it but I just wanted to be sure! I believe it is fairly common for agencies to have such an award/citation for their LEO's. As for how common it is for individual officers to get it, at my agency they are not super common for patrol guys and gals. They usually require a rather large amount of DUI arrests, so they are rather time consuming (and many officers don't seek out DUI's necessarily). It sounds like your stepson is really working the DUI enforcement and is being recognized for it. Good for him!

is this your subtle way to brag? =P jk congrats though!

well I'm sure they have quarterly/yearly recognition ceremonies. For CHP I think it was yearly and I remembered an Officer got an award for most stolen vehicle recoveries. but the officer that won it worked the beat that responded to the US/Mexico border in San Diego and customs would check vehicles coming across and CHP responds so he didnt necessarily find it himself he just did the paperwork. as well as people that went over to recover their own vehicle and would have to wait for CHP to respond to clear their car.

what's ridiculous is when I hear, show me releasing the vehicle to a sober passenger. should've had them driving in the first place.

How many arrests was it? Each dept gets an award and its not based on numbers area wide, just dept. My parter beat me out in 2009 by one arrest... He had 33 and I had 32.

There was a guy just south of us who had something like 200 arrests and he also got the MADD award. He was on a deuce team and that's all he did...patrol stopped em, he hooked em. I call it cheating when it comes to getting an award though... Kinda like going to the pier and hauling in everyone else's fish in and calling it yours.

The end result is the same though..... Potential murders off the street.

For DUI's as stated above, MADD recognizes officers. They present a commendation and pin (most depts allow it to be worn on the uniform) a steps of 25 arrests/year. At 100 arrests, you get invited to a nice luncheon and ceremony.

An individual dept may have internal commendations for various reasons. How common it is depends on the culture and mechanisms of the department.

I finally got chance to talk to hi. It was the MADD award for 25 arrests.

He has seen some bad results as a kid from drinking drivers so he is pretty intense about them. most of them are so drunk they cant even pass the basic stuff.

                            Thanks for the reply's
