    ride along questions

I have a ride along scheduled for this friday night with the rancho cucamonga police department. I was just wondering what you guys feel some of the do's and dont's are while on a riding along. Any advice is welcome the watch commander only told me to wear a polo and comfortable pants and bring a jacket. Any other advice? Do you guys think bringing a drink with me like water or a monster is not appropriate?
    Thanks for any advice

Bringing a drink is quite alright! Depending on the call volume, we can go hours without food or water. The best thing to do is to ask the Officer (or Deputy) what his or her expectations are. You will most likely get a very practical do's and don'ts conversation. Enjoy yourself and keep your eyes open!

Yeah bring a bottle of water, ask the Deputy (Rancho is a contract city) for the basic rules, listen to any and all directions by the Deputy. Pay attention, ask intelligent questions (but not when the Deputy is listening to radio traffic), and enjoy yourself! Also, if it is slow, feel free to make idle conversation, that has always been welcome on any ride along I've been on.

After you have your ride along with SDSO in Rancho, check out one of the ****ty cities they contract with (like Victorville). Last I spoke with my family in SBSO, Rancho is a long wait after you get in your jail time.

Show up well rested. You may end up somewhere on a call that goes on for a while.

Amen to that. I had a buddy that came for a ride along one night and 7 hours into the 10 hour shift we had a DB shoot at one of my beat partners...Scene, perimeter, etc. went on for an easy 8 more hours...

Quick side note. If you're going to bring a drink bring a bottle and not a can. Patrol cars, at least in my agency, don't have cup holders.
