V.I.N. Numbers

Bought a jeep last year from an old farmer. 1951 I beleve. We hauled it down to Kramer Junction last year.

I looked high and low. Can't find a VIN Number ANYWHERE.

Check the net, and all of the information I was able to find was that the VIN number is located on a data plate only.

Now what do I do ?

By the way, this is a Military M38 Jeep, 1951.

Trailer it to the nearest CHP office. They will inspect it for you and issue a new VIN.

Looks like a fun project. If you are in a remote area, and have a resident CHP officer, check with him/her. They just might drop by for you and take care of it. If you have to trailer it to be checked, make sure you make an appointment.

Better you find out if it's stolen now rather than after investing a bunch of money.

Not stolen. I have paper work from the farmer that sold it to me, and a witness. I think I know a CHP. I'll ask him.

To answer you question in a bit more detail. You will first have to go to your local DMV office, and get the appropriate paper work. Once you have the necessary paper work, call your local CHP office and make an appointment for them in inspect the vehicle. If they are satisfied, they will issue you a new VIN. The CHP will install the VIN plate on the vehicle.

This can be done either before or after you do the rebuild.

Yep, I have the DMV bill of sale, and something like a Statement of Fact, and some other sheet. I have the wittness and me, All I need is the seller signature. I was hoping that someone who have the same problem with the VIN, can tell me where they found THEIR VIN #.

I know that the M151A1 VIN is on the data plate and on the Hood.

A 1951 [Eta CIVILIAN] vehicle may not have one.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS (VINs)

Since 1954, American automobile manufacturers have used a vehicle identification number (V.I.N.) to describe and identify motor vehicles. The early VINs came in a wide array of configurations and variations, depending on the individual manufacturer.

Beginning with model year (MY)1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration required that all over-the-road-vehicles sold must contain a 17-character VIN. This standard established a fixed VIN format.

Serial Number Locations

The vehicle identification plate is located on the instrument panel at the right of the instrument cluster. The plate includes vehicle name, serial number, manufacturer's name, ordinance stock number, part number, model number, contract number, and year manufactured. Another plate including name, patent information, and serial number is located behind the passenger seat on the front of the rear fender well.

I was hoping a LEO Might know. After all, LEOs, I'm sure, would like to look at a M38 and maybe have an idea.

Not very M38s around these days. It could also be a CJ3.

Sometimes, A LEO will pull one of these over for one reasion or another. Or maybe seen one around an event and dreamed on finding one to buy.

A LEO will have a better idea where a VIN # is better than a NON LEO.
That is why I posted it here.

So the answer is: This jeep may NOT have a VIN# on the body or frame, But only on the data plate. And that plate is gone. All of them are gone.
So I will take all my papers and pack the frame and body on a trailer and take it to a CHP office for inspection and get a new VIN#.
