Personal Patrol Rifle policy

A buddy of mine in a smaller agency has been tasked to write up a policy on personally owned assault weapons. His department is going to authorize the purchase (with a letter) by each officer. He's spoken to DOJ already and they have given him the info about the AG opinion regarding issues upon retirement and what could possibly occur in the future. I told him I would ask here because I know several of you have dealt with this issue. So the question is, what does your policy on personally owned assault weopons state regarding retirement and final disposition of the weapon? If I could get a copy of your patrol rifle policy, that would be a real benefit. Why reinvent the wheel. You are welcome to pm me so I can give you my agency email for your op sec.

Please don't make this a thread about it only being an opinion and the department can't do anything about it once you retire. I understand that and explained it to him. I am looking for what your actual policy says. If the new policy doesn't cover all bases then the chief will not allow the policy and will not sign any letters.

Our P&P authorizes use of personal rifles on duty, however the Sheriff stopped issuing letters for RAW's.

Our policy does not yet address what happens to the rifle upon retirement.

We have a personal rifle policy as well and we have conflicting opinions on what happens at retirement. The last Chief was all for letting us keep them. But since the new Chief took over, turn it in, sell it or move it out of state....If you still need a copy of a policy, let me know.

My dept just recently instituted a policy that allows us to carry personal rifles on duty. Our chief gave those of us that wanted to purchase a rifle a letter (to purchase a RAW). We were responsible for the purchase of the rifle, any accessories, and the fee to register it as an AW with DOJ.

The dept did say that there is a chance (due to the AG's opinion) that the rifle must either be given to the dept, sold to the dept, or sold to another officer at fair market value when I retire.

The only rifles we can carry are the Colt 6940 or Colt 6920.
