Thomas doesn't make a guide for my county anymore and it has grown so much since the last one was published, it's not worth finding an old one.

We have GPS and can pull up yahoo map right from CAD... Still, those luxuries might not always be working...

I guess I was one of the lucky ones as I grew up in the city I worked for (as a level one reserve). Not only did I know my city like the back of my hand, but I knew probably 80 % of the surrounding cities as well, except Palos Verdes. That city took you in all kinds of directions, you can forget South East even numbering

I also found landmarks to be a great help, especially when rolling to a hot call.

Not in some areas. If the area is completely built out and there is absolutely no room to build any new streets (and there are areas like that), an older map would do just fine.

I was thinking of Bakersfield in Kern County where I grew up. Google Maps show an empty field where my house was when I moved back there. They also changed a few street names which really irked me. Then there are the streets that start with one name and turn into another name all of a sudden.

A former police officer told me when he would move to new cities the first thing he would do is hop on the bus and ride around for a day or two. Best way to get to know the streets without getting lost.
