Dog attack question.

I went for a walk with my dog who's a 90+ lb. German Shepherd. Outta no where comes this massive Newfoundland dog charging at us which weighs like 130+ The owner was nowhere in sight, and I tried kicking the dog away. Luckly the owner came out and pulled his dog away. In the future if that happens can I use OC spray on a dog in a similar circumstance.? Just like self defense as it applies to humans? As I don't want get my hands anywhere near that thing.

Simple answer yes. Complex answer is yes, but be aware oc may or may not work on animals as quickly as it does humans. I oc'd the crap out of a pit bull one night, didn't work as well as I hoped for me or the dog.

Be aware of your surroundings (inadvertently spraying others) and whether you are down wind (don't want to catch a wif of it). Use common sense.

If you accidentally hit your dog or a portion and your dog is not affected you will become contaminated later if you are not careful. You will probably want to hose your dog down. Stuff is nasty.

I too have had my dog attacked twice and I have bought pepper spray to use if needed. In both instances the owners didn't have their dog leashed, while mine was. Both owners became indignant about the incident, and one couple almost got physical when I kicked the dog to seperate his teeth from my dogs neck. The dog was literally hanging off of my dogs neck as I picked up my dog...adn the other dog would not let go.

Imagine some of the trash who let their pitbulls run wild??!! You will be escalating the incident if you spray some tweakers pitbull with pepper spray. In that instance, I would think you need enough to spray the dog, and than soon afterward the dogs owner, than hope you can get the police there before his friends show up to "defend" him or her...or the meth helps his push through the pepper spray and you need to deal with him mano to mano.

Its a slippery slope to a violent encounter, but also not a far fetched scenario from what I have seen, and I am walking my dog in the hills above Laguna Beach, not really what I would call a bad neighborhood...

So while it seems simple enough to spray down a dog, eventually the owner will show up, and may also need to be repulsed.

What happens than?? What legal grounds are you on if he attacks you or your dog??

I have also been attacked when walking my two smaller dogs. I had no option but to pepper spray the heck out of this focused dog. He was so intent that even though I hit his squarely in the eyes at least five times, he was unaffected. After about two minutes he started rubbing his face on bushes and I took off with my dogs like a jack rabbit. It is NOT immediate. On the way home my eyes started to burn from the pepper spray on the container.

I have ditched this brand of pepper spray and carry bear spray now. It could save you and your dog. It may escalate if the owner shows up, but when your dog and you are attacked you have no options.

Ammonia/water mix in a water pistol will do the job with no permanent damage.

I spray dogs all the time at work. It usually works but it takes a while. It doesnt seem to affect their eyes like it does a humans.

If you are in fear, spray 'em down.
OC works on most dogs pretty well.

I've used a portable telescoping umbrella to fend/scare off many a dog. It really works/scares the poop out of a dog. And if it's a really aggresive dog, after popping umbrella open, you can followup with a kick and the dog won't see kick coming. You can also go thru the motions of picking up an object and throwing it at dog. Dogs don't know your faking and might scare off. I used these methods back in my meter reading days. Not all dogs are the same, some are just downright viscous.
