stolen gun question for leo's

here's the situation. I lent one of my handguns to a family member's that just recently moved to a bad neighborhood. Surely enough someone broke in there and robbed them. My question is since I live in LA and hes in Sac, do i need to go up there and file it myself or can i just give him all the info and serial number and he can file it stolen?

Technically it was a burglary but to answer your question, have your cousin contact the agency that took the report and ask them how they want it handled. You most likely will be able to just do it by phone instead of driving all the way up.

thanks for the reply. They didnt really take anything cause he didnt have anything to take thats why he didnt report it. plus hes in a area where your neighbors dont really talk, if you know what im saying. they just took his little sentry safe, that wasnt bolt down, and it had the pistol in there. he was more worried about me getting mad about the pistol. I dont really care about it just dont want to go thru the hassle of actually going up there.

I don't think it's a good idea to lend a gun to someone who, after it's been stolen from him/her, doesn't think a STOLEN GUN is important enough to contact law enforcement!

You might want to expedite that report - unless you don't care that your name is attached to that gun, wherever it might be and whatever it might be used for...

He needs to file a burglary report with his local PD, informing them that you are the owner of the pistol. They will need the serial number to input it into AFS and NCIC as stolen.

This needs to be done yesterday.

I second that. I'd never loan a gun for something like that. If you were truly concerned you'd loan him to the money to go to a gunshop and get his own. If its used in a crime I hope you get in trouble for negligence.

OP, I am not LEO, but can say this is good advice. I have a friend who was in a similar situation and even though he was sure to report the firearm as stolen, it came back to bite him in the worst way.

if you do not have a file number for the local PD you can file a lost/stolen report with your local PD and they can send it up there.

I have to admit it seems ODD that he didn't file a report locally. YOU MUST CYA when it comes to lost/stolen weapons. They do get found and it will get entered into the system.

here let me clear this up. He called me to let me know when he got home and found out he was robbed before he called the pd. I immediatly jump on the forum to get an answer to see if i would need to go up there. he did call the pd to file the burglery right after he called me. sorry for the confusion. usually with things like this, you are not going to get your property back. he was just more worried about me getting mad at him cause he lost my prorperty.

how was your gun stored, just wondering, did it have a cable lock was it in a gun shoe sized box locked up
